Siemens has received orders for five HVDC offshore grid connections in the German North Sea from the grid transmission operator TenneT. The latest order is the BorWin3 project, with a capacity of 900 megawatts (MW). Nearly one million households will be supplied with electricity generated from wind power via this link. In August 2013 Siemens already installed the HelWin1 offshore platform in the North Sea, thus successfully mastering a significant stage in German grid connection projects. When it is connected to the wind farms the HelWin1 converter platform will link the Nordsee Ost and Meerwind wind farms to the mainland, providing electricity generated by wind power to more than half a million German households. Thanks to the use of high-voltage direct-current transmission (HVDC) technology, the losses over such a link are less than four percent.
