Reflections from the Arab Universities Summit 2024

by Faye Bowser, Vice-President Higher Education Vertical

Attending the Arab Universities Summit 2024 in Dubai was a thought-provoking experience, organised by the Times Higher Education in partnership with the University of Dubai. The event brought together academics, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore the evolving role of higher education in the Arab region. Central to the discussions were themes of agility, sustainability, and global relevance – issues that resonate across borders as Higher Education Institutions (HEI) increasingly play a critical role in shaping the future.

Education as a Cornerstone of Transformation

The integration of higher education into the regions vision is particularly striking, there was palpable pride in how the UAE is on it’s way to becoming one of the largest international economic hubs in the world and how Universities here are not just institutions of learning but engines of innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. Dr Eesa Al Bastaki captured this sentiment, stating that “agility is a necessity,” with robust infrastructure and systems enabling HEIs to serve both industry and the community.

This vision is exemplified in the UAE’s long-term sustainability goals, including its aspiration to celebrate the day it exports its final barrel of oil. Higher education is at the heart of a diversified future, preparing the workforce and leaders who will shape evolution. There was a mindset to embrace the challenge given the great promises the future holds.

Bridging Skills Gaps and Driving Innovation

One of the most pressing discussions at the summit revolved around skills gaps in the workforce – a challenge not unique to the Arab region. The world is changing rapidly, it’s predicted around 65% of the future jobs do not yet exist and Universities are evolving to prepare graduates and the workforce not for what is but what will be. HEIs are increasingly adopting interdisciplinary programs, experiential learning models, and industry partnerships to address these gaps. This alignment ensures graduates are equipped not only with technical knowledge but also with critical thinking, communication, and adaptability – the skills necessary to thrive in a fast-changing world.

I was delighted to bring to life an example of Academic and Industry Partnership where we can join forces to address the regional needs and global challenges. We put in place an MoU between Khalifa Universities Ankabut – the UAE’s Advanced National Research and Education Network – and Siemens Smart Infrastructure. I was privileged to attend the signing of this seminal agreement. The collaboration focuses on digital transformation and smart campus solutions for the Higher Education sector. It encompasses a pilot project, market penetration initiatives and enhanced research and innovation aligning with the UAE’s strategic goals for education innovation and sustainability. These initiatives serve as valuable examples of how shared goals can lead to meaningful progress.

Rankings as a Call to Responsibility

A highlight of the summit was the unveiling of THE Arab University Rankings 2024, which prompted discussion about the broader role of rankings in higher education. Dr Rihab Khalifa reflected on the etymology of education, originating from ‘educare’ – unlocking human potential. This idea resonated deeply, serving as a reminder that rankings should not simply measure performance but inspire institutions to better serve their communities, contribute to national and global progress, and drive discovery and innovation. Dr Khalifa pointed out that to remain relevant in a changing world, HEIs must go beyond imparting knowledge; they must unlock human potential and inspire discoveries that advance humanity.

Rankings, when approached constructively, encourage universities to reflect on their missions and measure their impact. They underscore the need for accountability and transparency while reminding us all of the fundamental responsibility of education: to foster substance and create lasting societal impact.

Insights and Aspirations

The summit was a powerful reminder of the Arab region’s transformative potential. Across discussions, one theme was clear: higher education institutions are catalysts for economic diversification, entrepreneurship, and innovation. By embracing inclusion, collaboration, and sustainability, these HEIs are positioning themselves as engines of progress, both locally and globally.

The UAE and its neighboring nations are on an ambitious journey. Their universities are not only shaping a brighter future for the region but also contributing to global conversations about the evolving role of higher education. Their progress inspires a shared aspiration for institutions worldwide – to be agile, impactful, and prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
