Decarbonization & energy efficiency

We are shaping the transition to Net-Zero by reimagining operations, infrastructure, and supply chains through innovation to accelerate decarbonization.

Driving decarbonization and energy efficiency

We are living through a climate milestone. The global average temperature has risen to 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels. Every 0.1°C above 1.5°C puts 140 million people at risk of extreme weather. This is a trajectory that must be changed.

We have the power to lead that change through real, measurable portfolio impact. We aim to enable our customers to avoid 1,000 megatons of emissions by 2030 - about 1.5 times Germany’s annual emissions - through three levers: energy efficiency, renewable energy integration and electrification. Our Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero targets underscore our commitment to help return to a 1.5°C world - learn more about our impact.

For our customers, planet and society

We drive decarbonization of products, operations and supply chains via dedicated software and hardware, and by enabling renewables integration, energy efficiency, and electrification.

Across our own operations, products and people

We reduce emissions in our operations and supply chain by designing low-carbon, energy-efficient products, produced in optimized production facilities using our portfolio.

Highlight story

Enhancing energy system performance for Mercedes-Benz

Sustainable factory planning with Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz has collaborated with Siemens to co-create a Digital Energy Twin that cuts planning time, improves energy efficiency, and reduces CO₂ emissions - supporting the automaker’s ambition to run all fully owned production sites worldwide on 100% renewable energy by 2039.

Our strategic levers

Siemens technologies are everywhere, enabling everyday life while contributing to the energy transition through three distinct decarbonization levers: energy efficiency, renewable energy integration, and electrification.

The image shows a modern wind turbine farm with several wind turbines generating renewable energy in a rural landscape.

Renewable energy integration

We facilitate the transmission and consumption of renewable electricity, by enabling industries and infrastructure to transition seamlessly to clean power sources, such as wind and solar, while enhancing grid flexibility.

For example: On-site renewable generation
Siemens designs and deploys localized low-carbon power systems, including solar PV and hybrid energy, letting facilities generate electricity on-site, reduce fossil-fuel reliance, and improve energy autonomy.

Energy efficiency

We provide intelligent automation and real-time data that reduce energy use without compromising productivity, while lowering costs and improving performance.

For example: Digital Twins
Digital twins - for products, buildings, or energy systems - predict and optimize performance across their lifecycle while enhancing operational efficiency. At the same time, they cut emissions across Scopes 1–3 and enable energy savings without compromising output or quality.

Electrification

We provide solutions that decarbonize specific sectors by transitioning from fossil-based to electrified processes, accelerating the transition to electrified systems.

For example: Electrified transport
We advance electrified rail and transport systems, combining digitalization with clean propulsion to cut emissions across Scopes 1–3 while improving reliability, safety, and passenger experience.

Customer Avoided Emissions

Achieve >1000 Mt of CO₂e cumulatively.

Science Based Targets: driving ambitious corporate climate actions logo.

With our science-based Net-Zero target validated by the SBTi, we commit to:

  • Reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by FY2030 and maintain a minimum of 90% absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions reductions from FY2030 through FY2050 from a FY2019 base year*
  • Reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 30% by FY2030 from a FY2019 base year
  • Reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% by FY2050 from a FY2019 base year
  • Reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain by FY205
