After 62 years of continuous operation, the Oxea GmbH in Oberhausen/Germany decided to replace the Siemens steam turbine against an SST-600. Although the historical steam turbine was still working fine, increasing the overall efficiency of the power plant gave the necessary impulse for the replacement. The result: higher profitability and a 15 percent higher efficiency of the energy cycle. The new steam turbine is much smaller in size and demands 114 tons of steam per hour compared to the 130 tons before modernization. Also the leakage steam could be reduced from 1000 kg to only 100 kg.

Efforts to reduce CO₂ emissions undertaken in the past have focused on large, state-of-the-art steam power plants in the higher output classes. Going forward, the good experiences gained from existing high‑end ultra‑super critical (USC) coal-fired power plants needs to be transferred to power plants of the 350-MW size.

The chemical production complex of the company Oxea GmbH, operates around the clock, 365 days a year. The company now installed a modern, high-efficiency turbine-generator unit to replace an historical 63-year-old radial steam turbine from Siemens that has clocked 400,000 operating hours.
The new turboset enhances cost-effectiveness and thus profitability, while increasing energy-cycle efficiency by 15 percent.
