SINAMICS Safety Integrated

Machine safety is essential for efficient and flexible automation. SINAMICS drives with integrated safety functions simplify engineering, reduce wiring effort, and enable seamless integration with SIMATIC, SINUMERIK, and SIMOTION controls via PROFIsafe.

Simply safe, twice as efficient

Integrated safety functions combine drive technology and automation into a seamless safety concept. Engineering and validation are efficiently supported in TIA Portal and Startdrive, including the integrated Safety Acceptance Test, while PROFIsafe enables consistent safety communication across the machine.

Certified safety functions help simplify the implementation of safety concepts and reduce engineering complexity. This creates an efficient workflow from configuration and validation through commissioning and operation.

Certified safety

Certified system solutions support compliance with applicable safety standards.

Lower system costs

Fewer components and less wiring help reduce overall system costs.

Faster commissioning

Efficient engineering and simplified system concepts help save time during commissioning and maintenance.

Higher productivity

Shorter downtimes help keep machines productive and available.

Overview of integrated safety functions

Fail-safe drives provide integrated safety functions for reliable responses to safety-related events. Compliant with IEC 61800‑5‑2, they enable flexible safety concepts for variable-speed drive systems. Advanced functions such as SCA, SLP, and SP extend the possibilities beyond the standard.

Schematic diagram of the STO safety function for drives

Safe Torque Off (STO)

STO safety sets the drive into a torque-free condition: an undesirable restart is safely prevented. A fast restart is possible after STO has been deselected as the DC link remains charged.

Safe Stop 1 (SS1)

The drive is quickly and safely stopped and monitored – especially for high moments of inertia.

Safe Stop 2 (SS2)

The drive is quickly and safely stopped and then SOS is activated.

Safe Operating Stop (SOS)

The position is safely held and monitored at standstill for each drive control.
