AcegasAPSAmga and Siemens share a long-standing collaboration supporting the evolution of Trieste’s electricity network. The latest project focused on upgrading 28 substations, integrating medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage systems, voltage regulation technologies, and grid automation solutions. Completed within a few months, the project was executed in a live urban environment, ensuring uninterrupted service while strengthening reliability, controllability, and integration of distributed energy sources such as photovoltaics.

Medium-voltage innovation
New SF6-free blueGIS switchgear with Clean Air technology replaces legacy equipment, reducing environmental impact while ensuring high performance, safety, and compactness.

Voltage stability and renewables
Transformers are equipped with secondary-side voltage regulators that dynamically adjust output levels, mitigating fluctuations caused by intermittent renewable generation and ensuring stable supply to end users.

Digital grid control and protection
Low-voltage circuit breakers with communication modules and remote terminal units (RTU) enable real-time monitoring, data acquisition, and remote control of substation components, improving operational management of the grid.
From retrofit to active grid management
An integrated infrastructure upgrade
The project involved the complete refurbishment of substations in operation for over 50 years. Medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, and low-voltage systems were renewed and integrated into a cohesive architecture, improving overall grid performance and reliability.


Continuity of service in urban environments
All activities were carried out in densely populated areas with active users. Thanks to Siemens’ execution capabilities, including bypass systems and temporary power solutions, the upgrade was completed without service interruption.

The introduction of automation, voltage control, and digital monitoring transforms substations into active nodes of the grid. This enables faster response to network variations, better integration of distributed energy sources, and a more resilient, future-ready infrastructure.
