Megawatt Charger

Project co-funded by the PRR - Recovery and Resilience Plan | NextGenerationEU

The Megawatt Charger is part of the PRR Mobilizing Agendas and aims to accelerate the deployment of high-power electric mobility in Portugal, contributing to the decarbonization of transport and the energy transition.

The project involves the installation of high-power charging stations for electric vehicles, designed to meet the growing demand for fast, reliable and interoperable charging solutions. Based on Siemens technology, these systems are ready to be integrated into digital energy management platforms, ensuring intelligent, efficient and sustainable operation.

The Megawatt Charging System (MCS), based on the SICHARGE UC portfolio, combines multiple power cabinets, a switching matrix and a customized dispenser capable of aggregating power from several stations and delivering it where needed. This technology enables the charging of batteries used in electric trucks from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes at a suitable charging station.

The Megawatt Charging System complements the existing Combined Charging System (CCS) and positions itself as a potential game-changer in the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles, particularly in long-haul transport, where fast charging during mandatory rest breaks is critical.

Main objectives:

  • Provide high-power fast-charging infrastructure.
  • Reduce CO₂ emissions, supporting national and European carbon neutrality targets.
  • Promote the adoption of electric vehicles and sustainable mobility.
  • Integrate smart charging solutions, monitoring and remote management.

This investment is funded by the European Union under NextGenerationEU, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), contributing to the objectives of the green and digital transition.
