Many electrical fires start with arc faults

Arc faults pose a significant fire risk in electrical installations. They occur when electrical current jumps through the air – for example due to damaged cables or loose connections – generating high temperatures that can ignite nearby flammable materials. A distinction is made between:

  • Parallel arc faults: Contact between adjacent conductors such as phase and neutral caused by damaged or pinched cables
  • Series arc faults: Interruption in a single conductor caused by damaged insulation, crushed wires, or loose connections; often without overcurrent conditions

Modern safety technology ensures continuous protection

In electrical installations, short circuits, residual currents and arc faults create multiple risks. For continuous cable protection, personal safety and preventive fire detection, you need several protective components that work together:

  • Miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) offer protection against overload and short circuits
  • Residual current devices (RCDs) continuously monitor the current flowing in live and neutral wires. If they detect even a small difference, they instantly cut the power
  • AFDDs detect arc faults to help protect against resulting fires

AFDDs from the SENTRON portfolio provide reliable detection of series and parallel arc faults. They immediately interrupt the current flow – even in situations where conventional protective devices fail.
