CHALLENGE

Sinebrychoff needed a tool that would allow its staff to monitor the brewery's energy consumption both comprehensively and in detail, easily and securely in real time.

SOLUTION

Cloud-based Building X platform solution (ISO 27001) and Energy Manager application (ISO 50001). The solution is suitable for all types of properties and integrates with process control systems from different manufacturers.

ADDED VALUE

An overall view of different measurements in real-time enables data-based management. Scalable. Saves time and reduces errors. Secure user management. Alerts for abnormal measurement results. Possibility to predict consumption.

Sinebrychoff is not only the oldest food & beverage company in Finland but also the oldest brewery in the Nordics. In 2021, Sinebrychoff became the first company in the world to produce Coca-Cola carbon-neutrally using renewable energy.

“We managed to reach the Carlsberg Group’s carbon neutrality target for scope 1 and scope 2 emissions for the brewery 9 years ahead of schedule,” says Sinebrychoff’s foreman Joonas Makkonen.

In addition, the amount of water used for Sinebrychoff’s beverages has decreased by more than 100 million litres annually in about ten years.

“The group’s goal is to try to save all natural resources,” says Sinebrychoff’s COO Petri Mikkonen.

Building X has proven to be a strategic solution that brings tangible added value to the management and future development of industrial properties.

All systems and devices on the same Building X platform

In the summer of 2025, Sinebrychoff implemented Siemens' Building X platform solution as part of the digitalization of energy efficiency and maintenance of their industrial properties.

“Building X has brought significant improvements in both operational efficiency and transparency in property management,” says Sinebrychoff's automation expert Oskari Manninen.

Initially, data related to building automation and production processes were separate.

“Production workers had no view of the overall situation of the factory. The information related to energy consumption was scattered across the building automation system and the analytics tool of the outdated process control system, which only one person could edit. Retrieving the information required manual coding and the analytics displays were rigid. The analyses were partly done manually in Excel,” describes Riikka Sissonen, Sales Manager for Digital Solutions at Siemens.

Now the building automation and process control system and all devices are connected to the same platform, which creates significant added value for Sinebrychoff.

SINEBRYCHOFF

Founded in Finland in 1819.
Part of the Danish Carlsberg Group.
Consists of two companies: Oy Sinebrychoff Ab is responsible for the marketing and sales of beverages and Sinebrychoff Supply Company Oy handles the production and distribution of products.
Manufactures beers, ciders, long drinks, soft drinks, waters and energy drinks.
Centralized brewing operations in Kerava.
One of the security of supply plants in Finland.
Uses only renewable energy and manufactures their half-litre plastic bottles from recycled plastic.
Little-known fact: the carbon dioxide produced during beer fermentation is used after purification to carbonate other beverages.

The Energy Manager app helps track carbon footprint

There are several different apps available for the Building X platform, depending on the needs of the client. Sinebrychoff was the first to implement the Energy Manager app for monitoring energy consumption and the Data Visualizer, which enables customized views.

“Energy Manager has helped us identify significant opportunities for saving energy and closely monitor our carbon footprint. This strongly supports our company’s energy and sustainability goals – while improving cost efficiency and the reliability of the production environment,” says Manninen.

The app has received praise from users.

“The user interface is modern and easy to use, and it provides real-time data on the energy consumption of the properties, indoor conditions and maintenance needs. This allows us to react quickly to deviations and optimize our operations based on data.”

Strategic solution for industrial property management

The implementation of the Building X platform solution is a continuation of the long-term cooperation between Sinebrychoff and Siemens. In addition to Building X, Sinebrychoff uses Siemens' Desigo building automation solution, an electric car charging system, a virtual power plant and an energy storage system in Kerava. The company has also utilized flexible financing solutions from SFS (Siemens Financial Services).

“Once again, the collaboration with Siemens has been very professional. The implementation of the platform went according to plan, and Siemens' expert support has also been available during the operation phase”, says Manninen.

Now Sinebrychoff has a good overall view of the digital readiness of its properties and the opportunity to refine its operations to be even more environmentally friendly.

“Building X has proven to be a strategic solution that brings concrete added value to the management of industrial properties and future development,” says Manninen.

“This collaboration has proven that sustainability and improving business efficiency can go hand in hand,” Sissonen adds.
