SIMATIC WinCC Unified can be used from small, machine-level solutions with basic functions offering innovative operating concepts also for use in special environmental conditions, such as in hazardous, hygienic and extreme areas or shipbuilding to plant-wide supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems scalable and flexibly expandable to suit all applications.

Integrated Connectivity
Besides direct integration of S7-controllers, WinCC Unified offers native connectivity to PLCs of other vendors (e.g. Modbus, Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi). Standardized interfaces like OPC UA DA, OPC Alarm and Condition (A&C) or MQTT enable the flexible integration of production lines.

Module Type Package (MTP) standard as modularization enabler
When operating a modularly structured plant, the integration of process units from different manufacturers often involves a great deal of effort and problems, especially due to the use of different communication protocols and interfaces. Standardization is the key to open and flexible automation and plant concepts. This is where MTP comes into play. Module Type Package (MTP) is a formal description of the interfaces and functions of the automation technology of a modular process unit. MTP is standardized in the VDI/VDE/NAMUR 2658 guideline and enables manufacturer-independent integration of process units into a higher process control level. In the standard, a process unit is referred to as a PEA (Process Equipment Assembly) and the process control layer is referred to as a POL (Process Orchestration Layer). WinCC Unified can be used for Machine-level (PEA) and orchestration-level (POL) scenarios.

For the machine-level or module layer, the plant operator must be supplied in advance with fully automated, independently executable and tested modules. For this purpose, Siemens provides tools and libraries that support the creation of the required MTP files for these process units. The SIMATIC MTP Studio enables the creation of an MTP file based on TIA Portal projects. The engineering data from STEP 7 and WinCC Unified is used for this purpose.

To integrate the modules in the process integration layer(POL), the higher-level automation system must also be able to process the MTP files. The SIMATIC MTP Integrator for WinCC Unified offers the option of importing MTP files from machine configurations from different manufacturers into a SCADA system and visualizing them in a uniform manner, providing a separate faceplate library.
