A leader in biotechnology and sustainability

Smart building controls make the Biotechnology Development Center in Taiwan to a leader in biotechnology and sustainability.

A clear commitment to energy and operational efficiency

Established in 1984, the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) in Taiwan is a trusted partner in biotechnology and leader in preclinical drug development and drug commercialization that has specific focus on the research and development of new drugs and treatments. It has responsibility for the life science buildings and upgrade of biomedical infrastructures, development of essential technologies and the expansion of a professional workforce in Taiwan. The Center is also dedicated to improving energy efficiency and has demonstrated a clear commitment to reducing its energy consumption and optimizing its operational efficiency.

Located in the National Biotechnology Research Park (NBRP), the DCB has partnered with Siemens on an energy efficiency and sustainability optimization project. Selected for its smart building control technologies and systems, Siemens developed solutions that achieved more than double the DCB’s target.

€ 95k Annual electricity savings

21% Average energy saving rate for the chiller system

We are dedicated to promoting energy efficiency and achieving environmental sustainability while pursuing continued development and growth.
Chung-hsiun Wu, President, DCB

A holistic approach to achieving sustainability goals while adhering to strict environmental regulations

The DCB must maintain a stable, safe and high-performing research environment for its laboratories. They knew that HVAC would be their biggest challenge due to the vast amounts of energy the system was having to use to manage large volumes of air exchange. In fact, the air conditioning accounted for 60% of the total energy consumption of the Center. A multi-faceted energy-saving solution to optimize the performance of the entire building was implemented.

Chiller plant energy efficiency improvement

Advanced energy efficiency control was implemented for chilled water pumps and cooling water pumps, high-precision sensors and monitoring system to control the chiller system.

Facilities management system

Service engineers log in to the system onsite or remotely to record equipment inspection checks. Digital maintenance data allows easier comparisons and analyses with facilities operation data from the building management system.

Energy management service

Navigator monitors and collects data such as energy consumption, power data, chiller plant efficiency, air conditioning equipment efficiency and other data in the building for further analyses, setting energy saving strategies.

Lab intake and exhaust system optimization

In order to maintain the positive/negative air pressure requirements of laboratories, the amount of exhaust and intake air needs to be controlled. As laboratories must keep a level of cleanliness, the process consumes energy.

Lighting control

Installing illuminance sensors in public areas and lobbies allows the DCB to automatically enable or disable lighting in response to environmental luminance, saving electricity costs.
