Siemens EcoTech

To help make your buying decision easier, Siemens introduces the new label: Siemens EcoTech. It is an environmental declaration for our products based on product-specific evaluations of sustainability relevant key performance indicators.

Introducing Siemens EcoTech

Siemens EcoTech is an environmental product performance label designed to drive the sustainable transformation of industry and infrastructure. The label gives you transparency on the performance of our certified products across environmental relevant criteria, enabling you to make informed choices to support your sustainability goals.

Siemens EcoTech profiles validated by TÜV Rheinland

The approach and methodology of Siemens EcoTech were validated by TüV Rheinland according to ISO 14020 and 14021.

Siemens EcoTech assessment—pushing the boundaries of transparency

The foundation for our Siemens EcoTech assessment is the Robust Eco Design approach. The framework provides a comprehensive set of criteria across three dimensions covering the entire product lifecycle. Products must meet mandatory requirements and fulfill at least one criterion in each dimension.

They must also provide a transparent validation statement in the external accessible Siemens EcoTech profile. This ensures maximum transparency for you regarding the materials, design, use phase and end of lifecycle of our products.

Entire product lifecycle

Value recovery and circularity

Repairability

Increase ease of repair and maintenance through: characteristics, availability, modularity and compatibility with commonly available spare parts. Availability of repair and maintenance instructions plus use of standard components.

Upgradability

Process of enhancing the functionality, performance or capacity of a product. An upgrade to a product may involve changes to its software, firmware and/or hardware.

Ease of disassembling

Product circularity instruction indicating the ability of a product to be disassembled.

Recyclability

Ability of component parts, materials or both to be separated and reprocessed from products and systems and subsequently used as material input for the same or different use or function.

Take-back scheme

Process of returning product after end of use-phase for further modification within Siemens.

Sustainable materials

Low carbon material

Selection and purchasing of low carbon products, components, parts and materials including upstream levers like logistics, manufacturing at supplier site etc.

Secondary material

Material reprocessed from recovered material through a recycling process from pre-consumer and/or post-consumer waste.

Minimum material use

The quantity of primary raw and secondary recycled materials used in a product or part should be reduced with consideration for applicable technologies.

Sustainable packaging

Any materials that are intended to be used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery or presentation of products. Sustainable packaging focuses on the life cycle of such materials and considers environmental aspects.

Substances of concern

Substances of Concern (SoC) can be of concern for human health and/or the environment and/or have a measurable negative effect on the products’ sustainability. We maintain SoCs in the List of Declarable Substances (LoDS).

Optimal use

Energy efficiency

Product-specific ratio or other quantitative relationship between an output of the performance of products and an input of energy in the use phase. Decreasing power losses to lower the energy input for the same performance.

Durability/Longevity

Ability to function as required, under specified conditions of use, maintenance/service, upgrade/update until a limiting event prevents its functioning.

Maintenance possible/Updatability

Range of technical & administrative measures as well as management measures that are intended to ensure the preservation of technical objects or restore their functionality.

Our Robust Eco Design process

The Siemens Robust Eco Design (RED) approach provides the foundation for integrating ecodesign systematically into our product development and allows us to derive ecodesign specifications that are advantageous from an environment point of view while meeting our own sustainability goals as well as those of our customers and suppliers.

The Siemens EcoTech profiles download center

To provide maximum transparency, we have created the Siemens EcoTech Profile (SEP) for all Siemens EcoTech products. It is a Siemens-created, standardized product data sheet which gives insight about the product performance in environmental relevant criteria as well as about interpretation and comparison of data against an existing norm, standard or predecessor product.
