Inventors of the year for rail safety.

Research and development for the future

The future is invented today. Our researchers develop Technology with Purpose for industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare.

Doing research together - for a more sustainable future

In our research sites in Europe, America and Asia experienced scientists work together with PhD students, post docs, partners, and customers to shape the future – a sustainable future in which the digital transformation enables us to sustain and enhance the standard of living.

Research and Development at Siemens

Innovation is our capital. In fiscal year 2025 our R&D expenditures reached €6.6 bn. Some 53.200 employees working in various research departments across Siemens created 5.300 inventions and filed 2.600 patent applications – claiming 6th place in the European Patent Offices patent ranking. In our global Research and Innovation Ecosystem, we form strategic collaboration alliances with academia, startups and suppliers to accelerate technology development.

Technology is our passion. We want to make our customers successful, and therefore we focus on core technologies that are most important to them. Our researchers work closely with customers and partners because we achieve the best results in an open exchange.
Dr. Peter Körte, CTO and CSO, Siemens AG

Driving Innovation at Siemens

Research and Development (R&D) at Siemens plays a central role in shaping the future of our products and innovations. Our teams work across more than 150 research sites in Europe, America, and Asia. Key R&D locations include Germany, Austria, the US, China, Portugal, and India.R&D acts as a strategic partner to support the executive units of Siemens. As a result, our main research focus lies on future technologies for industry, infrastructure, mobility, and healthcare. At the same time, Siemens R&D is closely connected with academic institutions and industrial partners, often taking a leading role in joint funded research projects. In all our business areas we experience the current trend that the digital world moves into our real world – what e.g., used to be a solid model can now become a simulation in your VR goggles. This digital transformation brings about countless opportunities for an – attractive and sustainable – future and will dominate the research activities for the years to come.

Funding Projects

In order to foster joint research and open innovation, we actively participate in public funded projects such as the following:

ENSURE

Siemens AG is participating in the Kopernikus project ENSURE3 as consortium leader.

In the project, Siemens AG will contribute to the four main objectives and, together with the partners, derive recommendations for action for various stakeholders. Siemens AG is also involved in numerous technological developments in the energy transition toolbox. As a contribution to the co-demonstration platform, the Single Source of Truth will be further developed and work will be carried out on the integration of flexible station control technology. Siemens AG will set up a showroom to transfer the results.Learn more about the ENSURE Project

PredictEco

Product development with consideration of simulation-based sustainability assessment

In order to support the economy on the path to greater sustainability, the PredictECO team has set itself the goal of optimizing real production with the help of a virtual image - a green digital twin. To this end, a platform is to be developed that is capable of evaluating the sustainability of resource-intensive manufacturing processes during the design or simulation phase.
