Alarm monitoring for optimized building operations

To further improve the performance, safety, and operational efficiency of its buildings, Korea-based WONIK HOLDINGS relies on the cloud-based building platform Building X and the Building X application Operations Manager.

A technology backbone for smart buildings

As a global engineering powerhouse, WONIK HOLDINGS provides end-to-end engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions with proven excellence in semiconductor and display sectors. Until now, the company has been using Desigo CC, but they recently came to Siemens for a new solution that would enable remote alarm monitoring.

Successful collaboration

Given Siemens' previous success in integrating the Desigo CC platform, it was an obvious choice to work together again to extend the existing building management system and integrate the cloud-based Building X platform. Siemens' extensive portfolio and proven solution development capabilities were key factors in the decision. The company's customized solution consulting, which includes initial design and technical support, was also a significant advantage.

In addition, Siemens' state-of-the-art engineering skills and technology, based on many years of experience, were a major asset. The stability of the construction schedule management, coupled with unwavering customer service and technical support, further solidified Siemens as a trusted partner for WONIK HOLDINGS.

Monitoring 300 alarm points in real time

It quickly became clear that extending the existing building management system Desigo CC by integrating it with the cloud-based Building X platform and using the Building X application Operations Manager would enhance the monitoring capabilities. This would provide WONIK HOLDINGS with an effective and comprehensive solution tailored to their specific needs.

The company currently monitors approximately 300 alarm points in the building management system. Building X allows WONIK HOLDINGS to manage building operations from a single platform using the Operations Manager application. The application enables the company to remotely operate and monitor a wide range of building assets in real time from anywhere.

Close collaboration to ensure seamless operations

Implementing the solution presented several specific challenges. One of them was to ensure that security measures operated reliably during the implementation of the new solution. This was achieved through careful planning and close collaboration with the security team.

In addition, the implementation required the installation of the Building X Connector, which provides connectivity from Desigo CC installations to Building X applications such as the Operations Manager. The installation and necessary on-site database update took some time initially but pays off in the long run.

To enable the use of the mobile app, it was also necessary to upgrade Desigo CC to meet the company's needs and provide the desired functionality.

A glimpse of what the future holds

By implementing the new solution, WONIK HOLDINGS achieved its primary goal: effective remote alarm monitoring. Operators can now monitor issues in real time and remotely access the building management system for immediate response. This capability increases operational efficiency and enables WONIK HOLDINGS to expand the solution to other offices in South Korea, demonstrating the scalability and effectiveness of the system.

The improved monitoring capabilities may indirectly contribute to better energy management by ensuring that systems are operating optimally and problems are resolved promptly.

To improve our operational efficiency and sustainability, we are considering implementing an energy monitoring and energy saving system. Siemens has demonstrated exceptional accuracy in meeting customer requirements from the earliest stages of our collaboration. We look forward to continuing this collaborative and productive approach and a mutually beneficial partnership
