EHS. Gemeinsam für eine sichere und nachhaltige Zukunft

Environmental protection, health management and safety for Germany

The world is changing faster and faster – and it's changing now. It's happening every day. Our customers, employees, and society are facing an ever-increasing number of challenges. We are committed to environmental protection, the conservation of natural resources, promoting our employees' health and performance, and ensuring safe working conditions.

EHS is about more than just meeting compliance requirements, laws, regulations, or industry standards. It's about understanding EHS as an important driver of the overall business strategy. And we do so based on the company's values: responsible, excellent, and innovative.

Sustainbility Report 2024: Responsibility for a better future

For over 176 years, we have been developing innovative technologies to tackle the challenge of our time and improve the lives of billions of people. With our holistic approach to sustainability, the DEGREE framework, we set clear goals in the areas of climate protection, resource management, diversity, health, safety and corporate governance. The Sustainability Report 2024 shows how we are implementing these goals, making progress and making a positive contribution to society and the environment together with our employess and partners.

Environmental protection

As a global player, we bear a special responsibility for worldwide challenges such as demographic change, climate change, and limited resources. Environmental protection has been a central focus for us since 1971.

We harmonize economic, ecological, and social requirements and meet our social responsibility head on. We use technological progress and innovative solutions to minimize the negative impact of our business activities on the environment. At the same time, we ensure our long-term competitiveness by making the most of valuable and often expensive raw materials.

At Siemens, we offer a comprehensive range of expertise, all in one place. We provide competitive, environmentally friendly product design, improved resource efficiency, assessment and advice on environmental risks, and support for legal certainty.

Conserving natural resources through a circular economy

The goal of a circular economy is to conserve natural resources by closing material and energy cycles as efficiently as possible. This process begins with product design. At every stage of processing, materials are used in a way that minimizes residual waste and maintains closed-loop systems. After a long lifespan, the end product can be almost entirely recycled, keeping a significant portion of raw materials within the production cycle. By supporting this approach, we contribute to protecting our environment.

Towards Zero Waste – Waste Separation at the Munich Perlach Site

We take waste and resource management very seriously. In a world with a rapidly growing population and increasingly scarce resources, this issue is becoming ever more important. That’s why we have made waste management a key component of the global EHS environmental program.

Our goal is to ensure that no waste ends up in landfills but remains within the economic cycle. With a recycling rate of 99 %, the Munich Perlach site is well on its way to achieving this objective.

Take-back offer for packaging, old electrical appliances and batteries

Some packaging, electrical appliances and batteries contain harmful substances that pollute the environment hen released. They also contain valuable resources that can be reused through recycling. Points of sale for electrical appliances are therefore obliged to take back old appliances, and our customers can also return packaging, electrical appliances, and batters to enable resource-conserving disposal.

Health management

It is a simple fact that a healthy working environment is a prerequisite for satisfied, motivated and creative employees.

We align health activities in the company with the requirements of today's working world and continuously improve occupational health management.

Our workplace health promotion strengthens the physical and mental health of people in the company, increasing motivation in the long term, reducing sickness costs, improving the employer image and increasing competitiveness. We rely on a planned approach and support the implementation of local requirements for the promotion of health issues with suitable instruments.

Promoting the health of our employees

Foundation of the pension, widows' and orphans' fund

Werner von Siemens was a pioneer who insured the people in the company with a health, death and disability fund 30 years before the introduction of statutory health insurance. In 1872, he founded the "Pension, Widows' and Orphans' Fund", thus laying the foundation for Siemens Health Management.

The first company doctor at Siemens

Werner von Siemens knew that promoting health and safety at work was crucial for his employees' well-being. In 1888, he appointed Dr. Friedrich Körte as company doctor, laying the foundation for today's Medical Services.
