Thermal testing

Performing nondestructive thermal characterization, reliability and quality testing for power electronics — from design to manufacturing.

What is thermal testing?

Thermal testing is the process of measuring and characterizing how heat moves through a component, package or system, and how that heat affects performance over time. For electronics, this means understanding junction temperature, heat flow paths and thermal resistance under real operating conditions.

Traditional approaches, such as thermocouples, infrared imaging or x-ray inspection, only tell part of the story. They capture surface temperatures or geometric detail but they can't reveal what's happening inside a component and some risk damaging the device under test in the process.

Simcenter for thermal testing

Simcenter thermal testing hardware solutions provide component and systems suppliers with the ability to accurately and efficiently test, measure and thermally characterize semiconductor integrated circuit packages, power electronics modules and complete electronic systems.

10x Improved power module lifetime

-78% Time and cost reduction in designing ECUs

+30% Heat dissipation capacity and lifetime increase

Capabilities

Simcenter thermal testing solutions directly measure the actual heating or cooling curves of packaged semiconductor devices continuously and in real time, rather than artificially composing this from the results of several individual tests.

JEDEC-compliant thermal metrics

Simcenter Micred T3STER uses an electrical test method compliant with JEDEC 51, delivering junction temperature accuracy within 1/100th of a degree. A single test generates the values that matter most — RthJC, RthJP and RthJA — ready to drop straight into your technical specification sheet.

One-click structure functions

The test method uses the device itself as a temperature sensor, applying a power step and measuring the transient response. With one click, it converts that response into thermal impedance profiles and structure functions — fast enough for high-volume testing or production-line integration, even on complex designs.

Industry applications

Simcenter helps engineers across industries characterize thermal behavior, validate designs and ensure long-term reliability — no matter how specialized the application.
