Who is Signature Healthcare

Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital has stood by one mission since 1896: provide high quality care to every patient, regardless of their ability to pay. Over time, the campus that supported that mission began to show its age – from boilers and operating room HVAC to parking lots that had been deferred from the capital plan year after year.

At the same time, new climate expectations were reshaping healthcare, with federal calls to cut emissions and move toward net zero. The question was not whether to act, but how to modernize a critical community hospital without compromising its mission or consuming scarce capital.

Modernizing the foundation

The first phase focused on reducing energy use and addressing the most urgent deferred maintenance across the campus. Siemens and Signature Healthcare upgraded the central heating and cooling plant, introduced combined heat and power, retrofitted operating room HVAC, improved the building envelope, installed LED lighting and controls, and implemented water conservation and electrical efficiency measures. These actions delivered significant energy and operational savings, improved comfort for patients and staff, and strengthened the reliability of critical hospital systems – setting the standard for energy efficient healthcare facilities.

More value than any budget could fund

One of the most visible changes on the Brockton campus is the parking area. To make room for solar carports, the project included new asphalt, curbing, and stormwater infrastructure – upgrades that had appeared on the capital plan for years but were repeatedly postponed in favor of clinical investments. Through the power purchase agreement structure, these improvements were delivered as part of the energy project without additional capital. Patients and staff now arrive at a safer, more welcoming, and weather protected parking environment that generates clean electricity above and rests on modern infrastructure below.
