Bayreuth District Hospital is breaking new ground together with Siemens to make its power and heat supply fit for the future. The energy savings and the resulting cost benefits are being achieved without any loss of comfort for patients or disadvantages for hospital processes.

Optimizing for cost and supply

Hospitals are under pressure to cut costs and save energy. To combat this, energy efficiency measures are a vital lever to achieve savings and free up funds for medical infrastructure and patients. In the past, Bayreuth District Hospital obtained electricity and heat from outside, also using this to generate its process steam. However, its central steam generation plant was oversized and used too much energy. The outdated plant has now been comprehensively renewed, with Siemens implementing state-of-the-art treatment methods and optimizing electricity and heat supplies.

Reliable energy for optimal treatment

A hospital's medical expertise is the basis of good recovery, but patient comfort also plays an important role – improving their sense of well-being in a welcoming environment. In order to provide them with optimal treatment and accommodation while at the same time ensuring a sustainable energy supply, Bayreuth District Hospital is developing a customized solution together with Siemens and its energy experts.

Efficiently steaming up

Bayreuth District Hospital will replace its central steam generation plant with a decentralized, demand-controlled, rapid steam generation system. The boilers will also be modernized and equipped with a control management system, significantly increasing their efficiency. In addition, Siemens is installing a new medium-voltage compact station with grid feed-in. This brings greater security of supply to Bayreuth District Hospital. It will also enable the hospital's own combined heat and power (CHP) plant to supply electricity, heat and additional revenue in the future, as surplus electricity will be sold on the electricity exchange.

Demand-driven, cloud-based control

Siemens is optimizing Bayreuth District Hospital’s kitchen ventilation system by replacing it with the innovative Kitchen Air Flow. Its on-demand control ramps up ventilation only when needed, saving energy. All new equipment is monitored and controlled by Desigo CC, Siemens building management platform, while Navigator, Siemens cloud-based energy and asset management platform, provides deep insights into energy management. The savings from the new, efficient technology and controls are enormous – and guaranteed, thanks to an energy-saving warranty contract.

New perspectives through modernization

The energy contracting agreement with Siemens effectively saves a third of the hospital’s energy costs – about €312,000 a year. Since Siemens guarantees these savings over 10 years and the state is subsidizing the project with €106,000, Bayreuth District Hospital is refinancing its original investment of €2 million entirely from the savings – without sacrificing patient comfort. In the long term, the cost savings helps to sustainably improve patient care and the energy savings improve Bayreuth District Hospital’s CO2 balance by 1,171 tons per year.
