Siemens’ first activities in the country date back to 1867 when it installed a telegraph line connecting the states of Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul. Today, Siemens equipment and systems generate 50 percent of Brazil’s electricity and provide 30 percent of all digital medical diagnostics. In June 2012, Siemens Brazil hosted the Rio+20 Conference and showcased the company’s sustainability efforts during the event. Siemens Brazil ranked among “150 Best Companies to Work For,” the country’s most important organizational environment survey conducted by Você S/A magazine. The Company was also elected one of the "50 Best Companies in Corporate Citizenship 2012.” In May 2012, the company announced plans to invest an additional US$ 1 billion over the next five years to increase its manufacturing and R&D capabilities.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Brazil amounted to EUR 1.945 billion and new orders totaled EUR 1.722 billion. Siemens in Brazil has 9.370 employees and operates seven research, development and engineering centers, fourteen manufacturing facilities and twelve sales and service offices.
In 1895, the company opened its first office in Rio de Janeiro and in 1905 founded Siemens Brazil. Today, Siemens’ commitment to Brazil transcends its business activities. The company also carried out more than 30 corporate citizenship initiatives in the areas of social welfare, educational support, arts and culture.
In partnership with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Siemens will build a global R&D center in Rio de Janeiro focusing on oil and gas and subsea technologies. The center will open in late 2012, and underscores Siemens’ commitment to the country’s long-term infrastructure development.
