Alarm monitoring for optimized building operations

To further improve the performance, safety, and operational efficiency of its buildings, Korea-based WONIK HOLDINGS relies on the cloud-based building platform Building X and the Building X application Operations Manager.

A technology backbone for smart buildings

WONIK HOLDINGS Co., Ltd., part of the globally operating WONIK Group, manages complex industrial environments where safe and uninterrupted operations are essential. With more than 400 employees in Gyeonggi‑do, South Korea, the company specializes in gas supply systems, gas purifiers, system piping, and gas scrubbers and serving customers in highly demanding semiconductor and display industries.

To control and supervise these high‑performance buildings, WONIK uses Desigo CC as its central building management backbone. As operational needs grew, the company sought to enhance this established infrastructure by adding remote alarm monitoring, enabling more flexible, mobile, and responsive building operations without dependency on PC‑based workstations.

Monitor 300 alarm points – in real time, from anywhere

It quickly became clear that extending the existing building management system Desigo CC by integrating it with the cloud-based Building X platform and using the Building X application Operations Manager would enhance the monitoring capabilities. This would provide WONIK HOLDINGS with an effective and comprehensive solution tailored to their specific needs.

The company currently monitors approximately 300 alarm points in the building management system. These include points related to mechanical equipment, indoor temperature and humidity. In addition, 42 different alarms are actively monitored to ensure optimal system performance and immediate issue resolution. Building X allows WONIK HOLDINGS to manage building operations from a single platform using the Operations Manager application. The application enables the company to remotely operate and monitor a wide range of building assets in real time from anywhere.

Close collaboration to ensure seamless operations

Implementing the solution presented several specific challenges. One of them was to ensure that the robust security measures continued to operate reliably during the implementation of the new solution. This was achieved through careful planning and close collaboration and coordination with the security team.

In addition, the implementation required the installation of the Building X Connector, which provides connectivity from Desigo CC installations to Building X applications such as the Operations Manager. The installation and necessary on-site database update took some time initially, but pays off in the long run.

To enable the use of the mobile app, it was also necessary to upgrade Desigo CC to meet company's needs and provide the desired functionality. These factors had to be carefully managed to ensure a smooth and efficient implementation.

Successful collaboration

Given Siemens' previous success in integrating the Desigo CC platform, it was an obvious choice to work together again to extend the existing building management system and integrate the cloud-based Building X platform. Siemens' extensive portfolio and proven solution development capabilities were key factors in the decision. The company's customized solution consulting, which includes initial design and technical support, was also a significant advantage. In addition, Siemens' state-of-the-art engineering skills and technology, based on many years of experience, were a major asset. The stability of the construction schedule management, coupled with unwavering customer service and technical support, further solidified Siemens as a trusted partner for WONIK HOLDINGS.

A glimpse of what the future holds

By implementing the new solution, WONIK HOLDINGS achieved its primary goal: effective remote alarm monitoring. Operators can now monitor issues in real time and remotely access the building management system for immediate response. This capability increases operational efficiency and enables WONIK HOLDINGS to expand the solution to other offices in South Korea, demonstrating the scalability and effectiveness of the system.

The improved monitoring capabilities may indirectly contribute to better energy management by ensuring that systems are operating optimally and problems are resolved promptly. As the results are not yet measurable, WONIK HOLDINGS is currently evaluating the implementation of an energy management system to monitor carbon emissions. Integrating a Factory Management System and extending the Building X platform with the Energy Manager application may be a possible part of this solution.
