Balancing IAQ and energy efficiency at Maine Township

District 207 faced a challenge to modernize HVAC systems and controls in three large high schools that were built decades apart. Implementing Siemens  solutions improved the quality of air and also reduced energy costs throughout the district.

School District 207 in Chicago’s northwest suburbs sought to improve indoor air quality and energy efficiency by replacing aging HVAC systems and controls in three buildings with different infrastructures. Facing that challenge, the district turned to Siemens to guide them along the way.

Standardizing on equipment types by utilizing a sophisticated control system reduces maintenance and energy costs to best optimize energy savings for the district.

System standardization was crucial

The most important goal was to standardize all equipment – system types, control equipment, rooftop units, and fan coils – to better monitor IAQ and reduce costs. This mission was presented to the community, and after demonstrating the value, a $195 million bond was passed. The district got to work on improving air quality and reducing energy consumption for 6,200 students and 850 faculty and staff.

Enhancing air quality, maximizing efficiency

The district moved to a system with 100% outside air based on the correlation between healthy indoor air and learning. Outside air is now being circulated through the buildings in record time.

Siemens controllers were used to automate the HVAC system, and pressure independent control valves (PICVs) were installed to reduce labor costs and increase energy efficiency.
