Championing sustainability

Lincoln University is a top land-based sectors university and has been tackling pressing environmental issues since 1878. It has set its own environmental targets of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and a zero-carbon footprint by 2050. To help meet these targets, the new research facilities needed a smart solution that would guarantee sustainable operations, as well as consistently identifying energy savings opportunities and measuring energy use for sustainability reporting.

Setpoint Solutions, a certified Siemens Building Automation Partner for over 20 years, has expertise in system integration and green building projects making them – together with Siemens’ innovative solutions – the perfect partner for this project.

It’s an honor for Siemens to work with Setpoint Solutions. They are consistent early adopters of our new technologies and are always willing participants in new product field tests and feedback sessions."

Realizing the vision with Intelligent Valves

To achieve the university’s energy efficiency goals, Siemens and Setpoint Solutions offered a building automation solution that includes building automation, building management, room automation, and lighting controls. The Building Management System (BMS) uses Siemens PXC automation controllers and TX I/O modules to manage inputs and control outputs. The solution also employs an extensive suite of Siemens Building Products including sensors, damper motors, control valves, and actuators for seamless operation. The key innovation of this project is found in the dynamic hydronic balancing solution. Setpoint Solutions deployed twenty Siemens EVG Intelligent Valves to control the primary air handling units across the new buildings. These valves are more than just system components, they are the keystones to operational efficiency and sustainability.

The project was initially specified and designed with standard motorized control valves; however, Setpoint Solutions’ engineers identified a significant opportunity for energy savings by upgrading to Siemens Intelligent Valves. As well as energy savings, the data gathered from the valves assists with remote maintenance and servicing.

Simple installation and streamlined operations

Installation and commissioning of the Intelligent Valves at the university was simple, intuitive, and quick, compared to standard valves, with only one short additional step for commissioning required. Additionally, the Siemens ABT Go app streamlines setup and adjustments with its user-friendly interface, making operations straightforward and efficient.

Reduced errors and improved reliability

In the university’s new buildings, the Intelligent Valves are set in their flow control mode which introduces further benefits during operation such as limiting the risk of human error; it also makes it easier to deal with alarms and identify problems at their root cause. Additional data from each Intelligent Valve provides service technicians with information to help with remote maintenance and servicing.

Lower material and energy costs

Material costs for Setpoint Solutions were lower due to fewer valves being needed in the system thanks to the Intelligent Valves' built-in flow limit capabilities. Lower materials costs coupled with higher energy savings will bring long-term costs savings to the university.

The installation and commissioning of Siemens' Intelligent Valves were simple, intuitive, and surprisingly fast.

Tackling tomorrow’s challenges with today’s solutions

Investing in intelligent valves and smart building technologies will help Lincoln University cut energy use and improve operational efficiency in its new research facilities. This will bolster the university’s dedication to academic distinction by providing a sustainable campus infrastructure and an optimal learning environment for its students.Like many institutions, Lincoln University is modernizing outdated infrastructure and introducing flexibility to prepare for digital advancements. Intelligent Valves are smart devices that can be connected to the cloud via Siemens’ digital applications as part of our Building X suite. This offers additional benefits such as remote access to multiple sites, real-time visibility and operation, data trending and analysis, all with Siemens’ highly secure connection. Intelligent Valves have multiple protocols and are ready for system upgrades and future digitalization if the university elects to further digitalize their building management.
