Turning a smart hospital vision into everyday impact

Kantonsspital Baden (KSB) is advancing its digital transformation to improve patient care and operational excellence. Together with Siemens, the hospital is taking the next step towards an autonomous hospital by turning building data into actionable insights for staff and patients.

From centuries of care to a connected hospital

Since 1349, patients have been at the center of Kantonsspital Baden. Today, that tradition continues in Agnes, KSB’s new hospital building, where modern architecture, building automation and digital technologies come together to create an environment designed around the needs of patients and staff.

As part of its ambition to become Switzerland’s leading cantonal hospital and remain well positioned for the future, KSB sees digitalization as a strategic enabler. With innovation viewed as a continuous journey rather than a one-time initiative, Siemens supports KSB as a long-term partner in shaping the future of healthcare.

Relieve staff and improve patient flow with IoT

Clinical teams can spend valuable time on manual coordination and searching for medical equipment. At KSB, Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) help address this challenge. Using more than 7,000 IoT sensors and 2,000 asset tags, staff can locate medical equipment via an app, making it easier to find critical assets when needed.

An app-based Indoor Navigation system also makes it easier for patients and staff to find their way around the hospital campus easily, helping reduce stress and delays throughout their journey.

Make better space decisions based on real usage

Examination and treatment rooms are among the most critical resources in any hospital. To gain greater transparency into space utilization, KSB has recently introduced Building X Space Manager.

The app uses existing data from the hospital’s building systems to provide meaningful insights into how these spaces are used, without the need for additional sensors. Through a central dashboard, teams can track room utilization over time, compare different spaces and export data for further analysis.

These insights reveal usage patterns and help teams assess potential bottlenecks based on actual data, providing operations, technical teams and management with a shared, objective basis for operational decisions and future space planning.

Driving innovation through an open healthcare ecosystem

Digital transformation in healthcare requires collaboration across technology providers, healthcare experts and innovation partners.  Through the Health Innovation Hub Aargau, KSB and Siemens work together to develop solutions that address real clinical challenges.

Supported by Siemens Xcelerator ecosystem, KSB benefits from an open and scalable digital infrastructure that integrates leading partner technologies, including Synapses for RTLS, heyPatient for patient engagement and PointR for indoor navigation. This flexibility enables KSB to continuously evolve its digital environment while enhancing operational efficiency and patient experience.
