Partnering to drive education and sustainability

Following their successful collaboration to establish the country’s first mechatronics training laboratory for Omani youth, GUtech and Siemens have partnered to enhance operational efficiency and and reduce environmental impact of the instiuition in Muscat through smart campus technologies.

A young institution with a bold vision

Established in 2007, the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) is a young, future-focused university aiming for a smart campus: an adaptive, inspiring ecosystem enabling flexible, digital learning, advancing research and teaching, all while supporting Oman’s net-zero 2050 goal.

Oman’s first major energy efficiency project

Energy efficiency, enabled by integrated systems that incorporate IoT devices, data-driven insights, smart building technologies, and renewable energy, is essential for making infrastructure adaptable, resilient, and sustainable. Since higher education is expected to take the lead in sustainability and there’s no better place to pioneer and test new approaches than at your own facility, GUtech launched its energy efficiency journey with Siemens as its partner, creating Oman’s first major project of that kind. Benefitting the university while supporting the nation’s 2050 net-zero goal, it’s the start of a vital transition with significant potential for all.

36% Energy cost savings per year

5.5y Amortization time for the entire project

1.5GWh Energy savings per year

We knew Siemens would be the right partner. Not just because of the solutions they offer, but because it was clear they wanted to collaborate and explore things with us in a project where everyone could learn, develop, and grow.

Advancing a responsible future

GUtech’s partnership with Siemens illustrates how innovation and technology can generate tangible progress in line with multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals. These goals are increasingly becoming an integral part of higher education missions worldwide to advance energy efficiency, promote sustainability, and empower the next generation to build a smarter, more resilient, and responsible future.

Solution for a more sustainable campus

Like many large institutions, GUtech has substantial energy needs. The digital solutions being implemented significantly reduce these needs. Optimizing the HVAC system, particularly the chiller plant, through Siemens’ Demand Flow solution alone has already achieved 36 percent energy savings – equivalent to the carbon captured by 60,000 trees – and is projected to amortize in just over five and a half years.

Taking the path toward a smart campus with integrated digital solutions even further, the project also includes a facility management platform based on Siemens Building X. This virtual platform enables continuous optimization of building operations and energy performance while providing data to support a new hands-on student learning experience.
