MST is one of the largest top-tier teaching hospitals in the Netherlands – and a great example of energy flexibility in action. The hospital covers a total area of 180,000 square meters. "In 2024, we consumed four million cubic meters of gas and 20 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. Of that, we generated 8.7 million kilowatt-hours ourselves," says Jan-Willem Jansen, real estate and facilities manager at MST. "We've been actively working on sustainability for years. Since 2013, we've reduced our CO2 emissions by 52%. Our energy, water and gas consumption has also decreased over the years." In 2016, MST took a major step forward by opening a new 80,000-square-meter building. The building is excellently insulated and features an Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) system and a heat pump.
