How Siemens addresses biodiversity

It's not just about the breathtaking landscapes or the diverse array of species - it's about the tangible services these ecosystems provide: the clean air filtering through forests, the pure water flowing from rivers, and the fertile soils supporting agriculture.

These essential services not only sustain our lives but also power our industries. However, industrial activities often disrupt this delicate balance, contributing to the alarming decline of biodiversity. At Siemens, we recognize the imperative to promote biodiversity as part of our sustainability efforts. A comprehensive biodiversity concept for our Erlangen Campus, and the vibrant ecosystem of Siemensstadt Square, provide blueprints for Siemens’ locations of the future. At the same time, our existing locations already focus actively on implementing measures to promote biodiversity, resulting in numerous lighthouse projects across all regions.

Manchester, UK

Siemens UK continues to advance on-going measures for biodiversity. With the construction of a new road and to compensate for the reduction in green space, our plan to introduce more trees, wildflowers, and other low-maintenance plants to support on-site biodiversity restoration. An on-site pond is scheduled for restoration, reinforcing our focus on natural habitats. Two types of bees are supported on our site, with ongoing communication efforts to encourage people engagement in beekeeping. Additionally, bug hotels made from recycled wood pallets have been installed, complemented by outdoor seating areas to foster interaction with nature.Looking ahead, our site is preparing to launch a biodiversity tracker trial. This initiative will use tablets at two locations to monitor insects, weeds, and other indicators of ecological health. A key goal is to replace overgrown weeds with native plants like wildflowers, further enhancing the site’s ecological value.

Karlsruhe, Germany

At our Karlsruhe location, a series of biodiversity measures have transformed the site into a vibrant habitat that supports both nature and people. To protect delicate ecosystems, sheep and donkeys are used as natural lawnmowers. Their grazing helps preserve habitats for insects and small animals that would otherwise be disturbed by mechanical mowing.Several traditional lawns have been converted into wildflower meadows, creating colorful sanctuaries for pollinators and enriching the local biodiversity. In addition, stone walls, deadwood piles, and earth mounds have been integrated to provide shelter for insects and lizards.The site is also home to its own bee colony, contributing to pollination and offering a hands-on example of ecological stewardship. For employees, snack corners featuring raspberry and blackberry bushes offer a sweet connection to nature during the workday. To support local birdlife, nest boxes for songbirds have been installed, turning the site into a welcoming refuge for feathered friends.

Cairo, Egypt

In collaboration with VeryNile, 19 dedicated Siemens people from diverse business units and functions united to make a tangible impact, removing an impressive two tons of plastic waste from the Nile River, allowing the local ecosystem to thrive. This initiative also fostered community-driven solutions. Local fishermen are now integrating conservation into their daily routines by actively participating in plastic collection efforts. Meanwhile, discarded plastics are being creatively repurposed into handcrafted goods by talented women in the community - turning waste into opportunity. The day on Qursaya Island also featured an interactive environmental awareness session, deepening our understanding of plastic pollution and inspiring personal action. It was a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to protect Egypt’s most vital water source supporting local biodiversity.
