Cut Emissions with Dual-Mode Rail Leasing
In a few months, ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft in Dresden will receive a new Siemens Mobility Vectron Dual Mode locomotive for varying track conditions. Part of Captrain Deutschland and SNCF, the company is using a smart operating lease solution to finance the modern rail technology.
The rail logistics provider operates a wide range of locomotives from various manufacturers across Germany. These include several Vectron Dual Mode vehicles that transport building materials, grain, and petroleum products. The hybrid model can run on both electricity and diesel, eliminating the need for expensive fuel on electrified lines.
The renewed order placed with Siemens Mobility demonstrates how satisfied ITL (the acronym stands for “Import, Transport, Logistics”) is with this climate-friendly and cost-saving solution. In addition, the company, founded in 1998, aims to leverage synergies, as both its driving and maintenance staff now possess extensive expertise regarding the Vectron Dual Mode.
Full steam ahead – but economically
The energy-efficient dual-power locomotive combines the best of both worlds. Thanks to its 2,500-liter diesel tank, it has the power of a conventional mainline locomotive when needed, but in electric mode, it can showcase its strengths in terms of environmental protection. Under typical operating conditions, this results in annual CO₂ savings of 950 tons and a 53% reduction in maintenance and energy costs.
The Vectron Dual Mode is approximately 20 meters long and delivers 2,000 kW of power at the wheel in both operating modes. It has four axles and reaches a top speed of approximately 160 km/h.
This technology can bridge electrification gaps in the rail network as well as non-electrified connecting tracks on the first and last kilometers, all without stopping or changing locomotives. This allows the rail company to respond even more flexibly to customer needs and enables more freight to be shifted to rail.
Customized financing for hybrid locomotives
ITL Railway Company not only operates various types of locomotives but also relies on different financing models – ranging from direct investment to rental and leasing. These models are applied individually and intelligently depending on the planned acquisition. In the case of the new Vectron Dual Mode, financing is provided through an operating lease agreement with Siemens Financial Services.
What makes this unique: Although the lessee has a purchase option upon expiration of the agreed contract, they may also return the locomotive. The risk of resale remains with the leasing company. The locomotive’s actual residual value at the end of the term depends on its condition and maintenance. Here, ITL ensures high operational readiness through its own workshop and qualified technical staff—in the interest of all parties involved in this transaction.
