Distribution board unites Breemes, Elektro VV & Testas

Wholesaler and installer combine expertise around Siemens SIVACON S4 distribution boards for energy-efficient and future-proof high-voltage installation.

Due to the installation of additional sawing and cutting machines, Testas needed a new high-voltage substation. For this, they called installer Elektro VV, which in turn knocked on Breemes' door for parts—including the Siemens SIVACON S4 distribution boards—as well as advice. The sustainability gain is not only in the ingenuity of the distribution board, but also in the long-term relationships that were strengthened during this project.

To explain this project case around Siemens SIVACON S4 distribution boards, four men gathered at end customer Testas in Wommelgem. Signed present: Gert Van Wezemael of Breemes, Wim Vingerhoets and Dirk Van Loey of Elektro VV and Wouter Goris of Siemens. And like the installation of Testas' new high-voltage substation, the interview too became a joint effort of professionals who complemented each other nicely.

Ikea for the advanced

For electrical installations, Testas has been relying on Wim and Dirk of Elektro VV since 2019. It is therefore logical that they were also asked to expand their electrical power supply. Indeed, due to the installation of new sawing and cutting machines, Testas needed an additional high-voltage substation. That ‘cabinet’ was built in one of their new factory halls.

Dirk: “Installing a cabinet like this is Ikea for the advanced. With very many different parts, part numbers and components, you put together a gigantic puzzle. Wim and I could not manage that alone. Consequently, Gert from Breemes not only delivered the parts but also came to help us on site for three days. Beforehand, he already made a low-voltage study and a kind of assembly manual, with the help of Siemens software.”

Breemes

Gert: “I already have some experience with SIVACON S4 boards, but the beginning is by no means easy. You have to know well in advance how you are going to handle it.” Wouter adds: “Breemes is a certified Power Distribution Centre Partner of Siemens. Gert can assemble SIVACON S4 distribution boards himself and advise installers such as Elektro VV. This is a great advantage for Siemens and a very nice way of working together. Gert solves a lot for us.”

Wim: “Gert delivered all the components to Testas in one go. I think that's a big advantage. We never had to wait for a part.” Gert: “But I also learned things from Wouter, Wim and Dirk. In this case, all parties learned from each other.”

About Breemes, Elektro VV and Testas

Zonhoven-based Breemes not only distributes electrical components (including Siemens SIVACON S4 distribution boards) to industrial installers. They also give their customers technical advice, often at the installation site itself.

Elektro VV from Boechout does electrical work and solar panel installations for private individuals and companies. For complex jobs—such as the installation of a high-voltage substation at Testas—they get not only parts but also expertise from Breemes.

Wommelgem-based Testas is a stockist of semi-finished aluminium, stainless steel and copper alloys. Their high-performance distribution system ensures continuity in deliveries, while their service centre cuts sheets and bars to size.

The distribution board is physically very robust and you can expand it, should you want to connect more machines to it later. That makes the board future-proof and thus sustainable.

Sustainable distribution board

What exactly does a distribution board like the SIVACON S4 do? It distributes the incoming energy converted from high to low voltage by a transformer to the machines that consume the electricity. There is a security between each connection. Compare such a distribution board to your fuse box at home, but on an industrial level. Wouter: “The SIVACON S4 board is type-tested for such jobs. That does carry some weight in our world.”

What does a SIVACON S4 excel at? Wim: “The board is physically very robust and you can expand it, should you want to connect more machines to it later. That makes it future-proof and thus sustainable.”

Wouter: “Some of the sustainability gains of the SIVACON S4 also lie in the future. The power switches already have the electronics to take energy measurements later. And the preliminary step to saving energy is mapping energy consumption. Only then can you intervene in the production process and adjust your energy cost. The board itself is no more economical than any other, but thanks to its monitoring capability, you will soon be able to manage your energy costs smarter. That way, you can meet the ecological targets imposed by the government.”

Avoiding peaks

“Everything these days revolves around peak consumption,” continues Wouter. “Are you sawing through a thick block of steel? At that point, for example, run your fan a little lower to avoid spikes." Connected to Testas' new cabinet are not only sawing and cutting machines, but also a press machine to press saw waste into blocks and a lot of forklift battery chargers. Wouter: “When you start such a sawing or pressing machine, it's best to dim the load capacity of those forklift loaders. That's how you use energy more efficiently.”
