How to get started

We’ve identified four areas of particular importance in the development of fire safety strategies: building safety, machinery safety, process safety and operational fire safety.

Building safety

This step involves structural, technical, and organizational measures to protect against fires, considering the fire load, production processes, and machines in use. The design depends on the building type, size, and purpose, and must comply with local building codes and standards.

Machinery safety

The risk of fire must be considered in all phases of the machine’s life and in all operating modes, including maintenance and repair. Risk assessment is carried out according to the SFPE Guide to Fire Risk Assessment (2023) / NFPA 79 Electrical Standard of Industrial Machinery.

Process safety

The key to process safety is to react quickly with early and precise fire detection of off-gassing events, using a multi-criteria point-type detector with a carbon monoxide sensor, such as the FDOOTC441 or OOHC941, in combination with an aspirating smoke detector, such as Siemens’ FDA241.

Operational fire safety

Operational fire safety includes all other preventive and post-fire measures, such as education and training, appointment of fire protection officers and assistants, maintenance and servicing of fire protection equipment and handling of suppressed and affected materials.
