Visual Inspection with Inspekto

AI provides lightning-fast quality check in the engine

With Siemens Inspekto Visual Inspection, quality checks at Horse Powertrain in Skövde can be done in just a few seconds.

In the center of Skövde's long-established engine production, a new AI-based vision system is now in operation. With our Inspekto Visual Inspection, quality checks can be done in just a few seconds – automated, traceable and without the need for specialized machine vision expertise. The result is a faster process, more consistent quality and a working environment where operators avoid monotonous and ergonomically demanding steps. The historic engine factory is thus entering a new era of smart industry where tradition meets the technology of the future.

With our AI-powered vision system Inspekto, the engine factory in Skövde, Sweden, is transitioning into a new age where deviations are detected in a few moments, traceability is ensured and operators are relieved of monotonous work. It is a technological leap that links traditional industrial knowledge with the intelligent quality control of the future – and puts Skövde even more clearly on the map as an innovation hub for the development of the powertrain.

From cast iron boilers to engines

Horse Powertrain

Almost a hundred years ago, in 1927, Volvo's first car, called the Jacob car, was launched. It was powered by a 4-cylinder engine manufactured in Skövde in a mechanical workshop that was founded as early as 1868, when Sköfde Gjuteri & Mekaniska Verkstad cast iron boilers and later manufactured marine kerosene engines, the origin of Volvo Pentaverken.

Today's engine factory in Skövde was inaugurated in 1991 and has over the years changed both owner and name, from Volvo Cars to Powertrain Engineering Sweden to Aurobay, which recently became Horse Powertrain , which today is owned by Geely, Renault and Aramco.

Hybrids key to faster transition

Horse Powertrain is a company that produces powertrains, including internal combustion engines and hybrid systems, headquartered in London. The company operates 17 factories and five R&D centers in Europe, China and South America, supplying powertrain solutions – engines, transmissions, power electronics and integrated hybrid platforms – to various vehicle manufacturers. While much of the automotive industry is focusing on an electric future, Horse Powertrain sees hybrids as a realistic path towards net zero emissions, especially in regions where electricity is still produced using fossil fuels.

Horse Powertrain's Skövde factory plays a central role in the development of the next generation of hybrid powertrains. Powertrains that combine electric and combustion technology are, according to the company, a solution that is crucial for reducing emissions faster.

“The world is not yet ready for fully battery-powered vehicles. Changing global needs require several energy solutions, which is why we are looking at various opportunities to support the market and vehicle manufacturers. One example is our range extender, a compact combustion engine that functions as a generator and helps to charge the battery, thereby extending the total driving distance”, says Elisabeth Kraft, PR manager at Horse Powertrain in Skövde.

A new hybrid system based on electric car architecture has also been launched, as well as a hybrid gearbox with 100 percent electric start and up to 80 percent electric operation in city traffic.

“Hybrid engines are an effective tool for reducing emissions here and now”, says Elisabeth Kraft.

Long tradition of quality and efficiency

Oscar Gejervall, verification engineer at Horse Powertrain

Efficient, high-quality production is part of this factory's culture. Here, the staff know their lean work and have received attention for optimized production. What has been missing are tools for more efficient final inspection of the engines.

“The check to find any deviations and defects has been done manually in the station. We wanted to change that. It takes a lot of time, and it is not so ergonomic for the operators with repetitive tasks. It's about quality assurance, efficiency and ergonomics”, says Oscar Gejervall, verification engineer at Horse Powertrain.

Plug & inspect with Inspekto visual inspection

Inspekto is our new AI-based vision system for quality control of various types of products and is adapted to enable operators to set up, use and maintain the system without the need for previous experience with vision systems.

“Inspekto is easily integrated with the automation system for complete and automated quality control”, says Iliass Temsamani, product manager at Siemens who helps manufacturers implement AI-based quality control.

“Traditionally, it has been uncertain whether a vision solution is scalable and profitable in the long run. But with Inspekto, you can evaluate the solution extremely quickly with your products to see if it works and within two hours you have a decision on go or no-go. No expert knowledge or previous experience is required, Inspekto can be handled entirely by the operators”, he continues.

Jani Minkkinen, supervisor in the Quality Department, sees many opportunities with Inspekto:

“Now we can check the engines in a standardized way, and because we save so many camera images, the analysis job becomes easier and we get better traceability. It becomes a very good complement.”

“The interface is very easy to use for the operators, even for new staff. You just add new control points if you need or remove, without changing robot parameters”, says Mikael Karlgren, verification engineer at Horse Powertrain.

“That's why we chose Siemens' vision system Inspekto, for its simplicity and high flexibility. It's quick to change and choose what to watch”, says Oscar Gejervall.

“The magic is in the software, which can be updated continuously”, says Iliass Temsamani.

The R&D work behind the smart AI-based system is the reason why it is now easy to commission and maintain an optimized fault detection process where even unforeseen defects can be detected.
