Digitalization of the water cycle in Calvià

Calvià 2000 successfully reaches its efficiency and sustainability goals with a 15% reduction in energy consumption, a 75% saving in engineering time and an 85% reduction in human error by implementing a Siemens solution.

The ambition reflected in four goals

Calvià 2000 is the municipal company of the Majorcan town of Calvià, responsible for the sewage network, water purification, water regeneration and waste collection. When modernizing their sewage treatment plant, their goals were clear: efficiency, sustainability, standardization and transparency. Siemens has collaborated with Calvià 2000 to ensure their plant operates to the highest standards of quality and efficiency.

15% less energy consumption

Sustainability was at the heart of the Calvià WWTP modernization project. Siemens technologies enabled a 15% reduction in energy consumption while helping create a more efficient and future ready operation.

75% less engineering time

Efficient engineering helped accelerate the modernization project. Using SIMATIC WinCC Unified and TIA Portal, Calvià WWTP reduced engineering time by 75% compared to its previous solution.

85% fewer human errors

Standardization helped simplify operations across the plant. By using Siemens SCADA/HMI technology, Calvià 2000 reduced operator training times and achieved an 85% decrease in human errors.

For these ambitious objectives, we needed the collaboration of a reliable partner and, therefore, we chose Siemens. Their proven experience in digitalization and being leaders in the water cycle control process sector in cities were decisive for the success of this project.

The Mallorcan company's goal was to treat wastewater and return it to the environment in an optimal state or, if necessary, to reuse it for other purposes. To achieve this, its wastewater treatment plant has to operate with the highest standards of quality and efficiency. Modernizing the existing control system and automation was a must. And, of course, to meet all the objectives for all its facilities, which consist of a control center, four WWTPs and 72 pumping stations. Without a doubt, this was a big challenge for Siemens and a 180º turnaround for Calvià 2000. Take a look how we were able to support Calvià 2000 to solve their problems.

Efficient engineering and operating with WinCC Unified

"The new SCADA system based on WinCC Unified is easy to use. We have been able to learn in an easy and intuitive way how it works to improve our operations and visualize all processes”, states Magdalena Martínez Conti, plant operator at Calvià 2000.

Siemens has set up a web server in a demilitarized zone with the WinCC Unified Collaboration option. It is responsible for managing web client access for remote operation, providing transparency to all Calvià 2000 plants. This integrated WinCC Unified technology offers major advantages:

  • Efficient engineering: no duplication of engineering processes by linking existing screens from other devices, plus it increases flexibility in system configuration.
  • Flexibility in operations: WinCC Unified provides common usability, displays knowledge from other machines or lines and enables full integration of screens.

Four servers, one project

Siemens has implemented four servers in this project.

  • One for the Santa Ponsa WWTP
  • Another one for the rest of the WWTPs
  • One server for pumping control
  • A server that controls everything

Thanks to the Collaboration option, Siemens has been able to create a collaborative server in a DMZ that manages the accesses of the web clients in a way that is transparent to the operators. As if it were a single server. In addition, the required cybersecurity standards are met in a simple and fast way from a single TIA Portal project.

Calvià 2000 sets course for sustainability

A 180º turn
Success is impossible if sustainability is not guaranteed. Especially in certain sectors, such as water, one of our society's most precious goods and services. By selecting the right technology, it is possible to take care of the environment and our people, while being efficient and profitable. Calvià 2000 made the right decision to trust Siemens in a project that has not only helped to improve the efficiency of its installations but is also environmentally friendly.
