Patient care without compromises

St. Joseph Hospital in Berlin trusted Siemens' hospital systems during implementing state-of-the-art building control technology and smart solutions for energy distribution, ensuring safe and comprehensive care for all its patients – including the more than 4,500 babies born here every year.

A commitment to energy efficiency

Reliable energy supply makes safe patient care possible, but reliability isn’t enough. In order to operate cost-effectively, hospitals must also prioritize energy efficiency. In 2011, St. Joseph Hospital launched a comprehensive modernization project, entering into an energy contracting agreement with Siemens aimed at significantly reducing energy consumption, costs and carbon emissions.

For our hospital, security of supply means security for the future.

Embracing digitalization for reliable operation

St. Joseph Hospital and Siemens updated the hospital’s building control system and power supply. SIVACON S8 low-voltage switchgear, in combination with smart components and the Desigo CC building management system, ensures safe and efficient operation.

Sustainable supply security

The building control system is a vital tool for reliable operation. The status messages of all disciplines, including fire safety and a third-party ventilation system, are integrated into Desigo CC.

Safe and efficient power distribution

St. Joseph is digitalizing power distribution. An 8DJH medium-voltage system and SIVACON S8 low-voltage switchgear were installed, supported by the SENTRON 3VA molded case circuit breakers and SENTRON 3WL air circuit breakers.

Energy optimization

Energy optimization is just as important as safety: SENTRON measuring devices, SENTRON Powercenter 3000 and integration of power distribution in Desigo CC make power consumption in the hospital transparent.

24-hour monitoring

Monitoring the building control system 24/7 ensures malfunctions are immediately addressed, even outside the working hours of St. Joseph’s technical staff. Siemens on-call service helps with expertise and remote support.

A hospital transformed

As the pediatric hospital with the highest birthrate in Germany, St. Joseph’s power and energy supply are imperative for patient safety. Today, the hospital’s integrated building management system provides a comprehensive overview of its operations, while energy supply security enables future-readiness.

Trust is the key to optimized security of supply

St. Joseph Hospital and Siemens share a long-standing partnership based on trust. When modernizing energy distribution and building control systems during ongoing operation, it is particularly important that the partner knows exactly how a hospital works. Because, in the worst case, an error can endanger patient safety.

Sustainability commitment continued

The targets for reliable, efficient energy supply that were set at the project’s inception were significantly exceeded in the years 2012 to 2021, with average savings of approximately €340,000 per year. At the same time, the measures taken allowed carbon emissions at the site to be reduced in the forecast range of 1,300 t/a; further reductions of approx. 400 t/a were achieved by converting to gas-only operation and installing a combined heat and power (CHP) unit.

After all, we are dealing with people and have to meet extremely high standards in hospital technology and security of supply.
Sebastian Wiedenhaupt, Head of Technology and Construction
