Selective Packaging Collection with REKBOT

REKBOT is a reverse vending machine designed and manufactured in Poland for the selective collection of beverage containers. It helps consumers and retailers contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development by making recycling more convenient and efficient.

From January 1, 2025, Poland’s deposit return system will come into force, introducing a range of obligations for beverage retailers. Smaller stores will, at a minimum, be required to collect deposits on beverage containers such as bottles and cans. Stores with a sales area exceeding 200 m² will be required not only to collect and refund deposits, but also to accept empty containers from consumers.

Reverse vending machines can significantly simplify this process. One such solution is REKBOT – a reverse vending machine designed using Siemens technologies and manufactured in Poland. In the face of increasingly evident climate change, protecting the natural environment has become not only important but a top priority. Reducing carbon footprints, using recycled materials, lowering energy consumption, and relying on renewable energy sources whenever possible have become standard practices for a growing number of companies and institutions.However, industry and commerce are not the only stakeholders in building a more sustainable future. Consumers – each and every one of us – also have an important role to play. This is especially true in the case of Poland’s deposit return system. The success of the system largely depends on whether consumers return used beverage containers for recycling and how many of these materials can be recovered and reused.The requirement to pay a deposit when purchasing beverages is intended to encourage consumers not to discard empty bottles and cans, but instead return them, for example, to the point of purchase and reclaim their deposit.

“The new regulations support the principles of sustainable development. They should help reduce the amount of litter in forests, parks, and public spaces, while increasing the share of recyclable materials – in this case bottles and cans – that are returned for reprocessing,” says Małgorzata Kowalczyk, President of the Management Board of REKBOT Sp. z o.o.

“To make the process of returning containers and reclaiming deposits as simple as possible, customers will be able to use reverse vending machines, which are likely to become a standard feature in most grocery stores larger than 200 square meters across Poland. This solution benefits both retailers and consumers. Knowing that they can return empty containers at a particular store, customers will often choose to do their shopping there as well,” she adds.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Selective collection of beverage containers has never been simple, and a large proportion of bottles and cans have ended up being discarded or polluting the environment instead of being recycled. The introduction of the deposit return system can help change this situation for the better.Returning containers with REKBOT is easy and convenient. No receipt or token is required. To begin, the user simply touches the screen, scans the barcode on the container, and inserts it into the intake opening. Once inside the machine, the container is transported on a conveyor belt, where its parameters—such as weight and material type—are verified. Thanks to advanced sensors, a detailed analysis is performed, and the bottle or can is either accepted or rejected and returned to the customer.

Once a container has been accepted, it is directed to the compaction module and then deposited into the appropriate collection bin. The bins are equipped with drip trays that protect the interior of the machine from residual liquids, helping to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. In addition, built-in UV lamps neutralize odors originating from the collected containers.This process is repeated for each container returned by the customer. Once all containers have been processed, the user simply presses the “Finish” button. For enhanced security, the machine does not dispense cash directly, reducing the risk of theft for both the device and its users. Instead, after completing the transaction, customers receive a voucher integrated with the store’s point-of-sale system, which can be redeemed for cash at the checkout.REKBOT is compatible with the most widely used retail POS systems in Poland. The machine has a capacity of approximately 280 PET bottles and 450 aluminum cans. For added convenience, store personnel can access the collection bins from either the front or the rear of the machine, making servicing and emptying quick and efficient.

Once a container has been accepted, it is transferred to the compaction module and then deposited into the appropriate collection bin.

As a result, REKBOT also accepts damaged containers, providing a significant advantage over many other solutions of this kind.

Advantages of REKBOT

One of REKBOT’s key strengths is its extensive functionality, reliability, and SIL-1 safety level. The reverse vending machine is protected against failures through multiple layers of safeguards. External protective barriers prevent insects and rodents from entering the unit, while its most advanced features operate behind the scenes.

The machine automatically notifies store personnel of detected errors, full collection bins, or low paper levels in the voucher printer. Thanks to advanced technologies, including Siemens automation solutions, REKBOT also features self-diagnostics and direct service notifications. Any detected malfunction, such as motor or sensor failures, is automatically diagnosed and reported to the service team, enabling a rapid response and minimizing downtime.

“For solutions such as REKBOT, the use of high-quality internal components is essential, as reliability and operational continuity depend on them. Equally important is the flexibility of the control system configuration, which makes it possible to adapt the machine’s operation to different customer requirements. In the case of REKBOT, this primarily means compatibility with various point-of-sale systems and operating modes,” explains Szymon Pasoń, Senior Sales Specialist at Siemens Poland.

“It is also worth highlighting the remote diagnostics capabilities built into the machine. These allow service teams to check individual components and read operating parameters without being physically present on site. As a result, if a service intervention becomes necessary, technicians can arrive with a clear understanding of the issue and the appropriate spare parts, enabling them to resolve the problem more efficiently during a single visit,” he adds.

An important advantage of REKBOT is its ergonomic design and ease of use. The machine is intuitive to operate and incorporates a number of thoughtful features that enhance user convenience, including practical additions such as a bag holder.

The device has been designed to prevent fraud and ensure accurate container identification. REKBOT uses a three-stage verification process. The first stage verifies the container based on the barcode scanned by the customer on the bottle or can. If the weight of the inserted container does not match the scanned barcode data, the conveyor system will reject the item.The second stage involves weighing the container, while the third stage verifies the type of packaging. The weighing system integrated into the conveyor prevents bottles or cans whose weight exceeds the predefined nominal weight of an empty container from being accepted. Only after successfully passing all three verification stages can a bottle or can be accepted by REKBOT. If any discrepancy is detected, the container is automatically returned to the customer through the intake opening.

“REKBOT can identify the type of container being returned, whether it is a bottle or a can. Naturally, it is impossible to scan a bottle and then insert a can, as this is prevented by the machine’s security mechanisms. In such a case, the machine will simply return the incorrect container.We have also eliminated other potential forms of fraud. For example, a user cannot attach a string to a container and attempt to pull it back out after scanning it, as the machine’s built-in security mechanisms effectively prevent such actions.”

Case Study - REKBOT 08

The machines have been built using a range of Siemens technologies and components, including controllers, power supplies, and motor starter systems.

The reverse vending machine supplied by REKBOT is also energy-efficient. During intensive operation, when the compaction unit is in use, the machine consumes between 650 and 700 watts of power. However, this level of energy consumption represents only a small portion of its total operating time. In standby mode, when the machine is powered on and waiting for a customer, it consumes approximately 170 watts, while in sleep mode power consumption drops to around 70 watts.

REKBOT: Siemens Technology Integration

Development of the device began in early 2022, and by August 2023 the first REKBOT prototype had already been built.

“For many years, we have been manufacturing our own devices based on Siemens industrial controllers. We chose Siemens as our technology provider because of the reliability of its controllers, which have consistently performed without issues, as well as the stability of its software,” emphasizes Łukasz Kowalczyk.
“Today, REKBOT is fully ready for mass production. One of the main challenges for our engineering team was the development of the compaction system—designing and building it in a way that would ensure reliable, trouble-free operation. We successfully resolved all technical challenges, and the machines are now operating efficiently. The first units are already installed and operating in retail stores,” he adds.

REKBOT incorporates a significant number of Siemens components, including a power supply module with electronic protection features. The central element of the machine’s control architecture is the SIMATIC S7-1200 controller, implemented together with expansion modules, including I/O modules and temperature sensors. The machine also features additional Siemens components, such as a hybrid motor starter with an integrated safety module. Siemens TIA Portal was used for the development of the machine’s control software.

REKBOT incorporates a wide range of Siemens components. The central element of the reverse vending machine’s control system is the SIMATIC S7-1200 controller.

Siemens devices perform two key functions in our reverse vending machine. First, they serve as the main control and execution components of the entire system. They collect signals from sensors and determine the operation of all machine components. Second, they are responsible for the safety functions of the hybrid motor starter system, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the device.

Software based on the SIMATIC Automation Tool libraries is currently being implemented. This solution will enable more efficient device management, firmware updates, automated deployment of software patches, and improved diagnostics of potential faults and system errors.
