Ege Carpets cuts emissions by 40% with electrification

At Ege Carpets, sustainability is not driven by regulation or passing trends—it is a core business principle. In partnership with Siemens, the company has replaced its gas-fired steam boilers with electric alternatives, reducing annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,500 tonnes. 

At its production facilities in Gram and Herning, Siemens has replaced natural gas-fired boilers with electric steam systems. This transition has resulted in a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions, while also delivering substantial financial benefits through optimised grid tariffs and reduced carbon taxation.

Siemens acted as both total contractor and strategic partner throughout the project—covering everything from initial analysis and simulation to engineering, design, and implementation.

From strategy to execution

In 2022, Ege Carpets launched a new sustainability strategy and committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aiming to reduce its carbon footprint by 50.6% by 2030 compared to its 2019 baseline.

This initiative reflects how sustainability is embedded in the company’s DNA—turning long-term ambitions into concrete action.

“When Siemens presented the opportunity to switch to electric boilers powered by green electricity, it was an obvious choice. We have long focused on reducing the climate impact of our production, and this transition marks another important milestone,” says Jørgen Kring Jensen, Senior Director at Ege Carpets.

“The transition has also strengthened our competitive position through improved tariff structures and reduced CO₂ taxation.”

A fully integrated solution

At the early stages of the project, Siemens conducted a comprehensive analysis using digital twin technology. Simulations evaluated different production scenarios, including fully electric and hybrid setups.

The conclusion was clear: switching to electric steam boilers provided the most cost-efficient path to significant CO₂ reductions.

Driving the transition forward

Electrification has delivered clear benefits for both the business and the climate. However, such projects require significant investment, which can be a barrier for many manufacturing companies.

Public funding plays a crucial role. Siemens supported the application process for the Danish Energy Agency’s industrial subsidy programme, securing DKK 6.7 million—covering approximately 30% of total project costs.

“This transition has clearly strengthened our position. My advice is simple: assess your production, identify opportunities, and take action,” Jensen adds.
