A crystal clear view on Energy Efficiency

Discover how Stoelzle Glass Group uses SIMATIC Energy Manager PRO to make energy consumption transparent across seven production sites – and systematically uncover opportunities to improve efficiency.

A clear ambition for energy efficiency

For more than 200 years, Stoelzle Glass Group has been producing high-quality packaging glass. Today, the company operates seven production sites, where energy-intensive processes run around the clock. To make production more sustainable, Stoelzle has set clear goals: reduce energy consumption at all seven sites by 20% and halve carbon emissions by 2030.

But meaningful improvements depend on knowing exactly where energy is being used. The company therefore needed a consistent, group-wide view of consumption – from individual machines and processes to entire plants – as the basis for identifying savings potential and tracking progress.

50% Identify water-saving potential

At the Köflach plant, monitoring revealed the potential to reduce municipal water consumption by 50%.

20% Reduce natural gas consumption

Better temperature control enables the annealing lehrs to consume 20% less natural gas.

Stoelzle Glass Group: Improving energy efficiency

Stoelzle uses SIMATIC Energy Manager PRO as the centerpiece of its cross-site process and energy optimization. The software creates transparency across plants, production areas, and individual machines, enabling teams to analyze consumption and assess energy-saving measures against the company’s targets.

This turns energy data into a practical basis for action: from improving temperature control in annealing lehrs and identifying compressed-air leaks to uncovering water-saving potential. The video shows how Stoelzle and Siemens work together to improve energy efficiency throughout production

Build a reliable energy data foundation

Stoelzle already had energy meters in place, but they were not interconnected – either within individual factories or across sites. Energy values were evaluated using spreadsheets, while standardized KPIs and automated calculations were missing. Starting in 2020, Stoelzle and Siemens worked together to define relevant energy and carbon KPIs, develop a viable metering concept, and identify the areas with the greatest savings potential. This created the foundation for consistent, group-wide energy management.

Turn plant data into actionable insights

SIMATIC Energy Manager PRO gives Stoelzle transparency from group and factory level down to individual plants and production lines. The first implementation took place at the Köflach site in 2021. Seventy new metering points for gas, electricity, compressed air, and water were added, while 1,800 data points from process and production systems were integrated. Stoelzle can now evaluate energy and CO₂ KPIs, calculate energy balances, track efficiency measures, and report the results.

Scale energy management across the group

The Köflach implementation was designed as the starting point for an international rollout. By applying a consistent metering structure and standardized KPIs, Stoelzle can compare energy performance across sites and track progress toward its group-wide targets. The solution establishes a scalable basis for improving energy efficiency and documenting emissions.

From pilot project to group-wide progress

The Köflach pilot demonstrated how a shared energy-data foundation can turn a group-wide ambition into measurable action. By combining metering data with production and process data, Stoelzle can identify deviations earlier, evaluate consumption trends, document efficiency measures, and calculate standardized KPIs.

The scalable approach gives teams a consistent view of energy performance across organizational levels while supporting reliable reporting and continuous optimization.

We made the right choice with Siemens. We’re now looking forward to the international rollout and other collaborative steps that will make Stoelzle a glass manufacturer that’s successful on the market while being verifiably energy-efficient with demonstrably low emissions.

Keeping progress in clear view

With a scalable energy-data foundation, Stoelzle can continue turning transparency into targeted action. Standardized KPIs and connected data help teams track efficiency measures, compare performance, and focus investments where they can have the greatest impact. The next step is to build on these insights across production sites and the value chain, supporting continued reductions in energy consumption and emissions as Stoelzle works toward its 2030 ambitions. As carbon accounting and reporting requirements evolve, the group-wide approach provides a consistent foundation for adapting and improving over time.
