The partnership between Siemens and the RhB has existed since 1898.
However, exactly 100 years ago, the first major project was implemented when the route from Landquart to Klosters was electrified in 1922 with Siemens participation.
On October 29, 2022, at exactly 2:00 PM, the time has come: The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) starts the attempt to run the world's longest passenger train in Graubünden. The train is to roll on the UNESCO World Heritage Albula/Bernina line from Preda to Bergün and further over the Landwasser Viaduct. Siemens is a proud partner of this world record attempt.
The world record attempt is a challenge for everyone involved, as well as for people and technology. With our safety-relevant key technologies, we will contribute to its success.
A real colossus will be transported on the rails: The world record train consists of 100 cars and has a total length of 1,910 meters. The train is to travel at 30 to 35 kilometers per hour on the 24,930-meter-long world record route. The entire train construction weighs 2,990 tons and 7 train drivers and 21 technicians ensure smooth operation.
The technical challenges for this undertaking are great for the organizers of the world record attempt. Synchronous control of the train formation must be enabled so that all 25 trains can accelerate and brake simultaneously, even though only four trains can be controlled from the same driver's cab.
With an electrical loop, the organizers ensure that in case of emergency braking, all trains brake simultaneously. During the train's descent, braking occurs via electrical recuperation. The electricity produced thereby is fed into the RhB route network via the overhead line. To prevent the overhead line voltage from increasing too much, work is done with speed and acceleration restrictions, reduction of recuperation using special software, and preventive switching of systems to local grid power supply, among other measures.
The partnership between Siemens and the RhB has existed since 1898.

Siemens solutions are used by the Rhaetian Railway in various areas.
The modern train control technology with signal boxes and train protection systems from Siemens Mobility guarantees safe and punctual journeys as well as high flexibility and overview across the entire route network.
In addition, video technology from Siemens Smart Infrastructure ensures safe railway stations, and power supply disruptions can be quickly located and remedied on the 384-kilometer rail network thanks to Siemens technology.
The tickets to be there live on site were sold out within a few hours. For those visitors in Bergün, come by the Albula Railway Museum and get an insight into our virtual signal box. The world record attempt was also broadcast live by Blick TV.
