Keppel Data Centres, Frankfurt: Platinum Standard

Keppel Data Centres is a company of the Singaporean Keppel Group. The company is a provider of built-to-suit and colocation data centers and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where it acquired a high-security data center in spring 2018. Thanks in part to the Siemens solutions used, this data center received LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) at platinum level.

The KDC FRAU 1 data center of the Keppel Data Centres in Frankfurt am Main consists of three complexes: offices on about 1,500 square meters, a storage and delivery area with around 9,500 square meters and the two-storey, 10,000 square meter data halls with a further 10,000 square meters of technical space for air conditioning and electrical supply.

Availability and reliability are the top priorities here – and thus an uninterruptible and redundant power supply, intelligent security technology and reliable building automation. Room automation must link and control cooling and air conditioning intelligently and according to demand so that server overheating does not occur.

Siemens solutions for building automation, security and energy supply are installed in the building itself . A redundantly designed energy feed-in system of the grid operator, supplemented by two medium- and low-voltage switchgear with redundant switches and busbars as well as double cooling systems, ensure maximum redundancy and reliability. The access control and fire protection solution is also crucial for the availability of the data center and data security.

If the power fails, two independent, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and emergency generators are switched on, which can take over the power supply for 72 hours without refueling. This allows the data center to achieve maximum redundancy and 99.999% availability, which is Level III of the standard issued by the Uptime Institute.

The high energy efficiency and LEED certification depend to a large extent on the sophisticated technology of the Desigo building automation system from Siemens, which also enables individual control and continuous monitoring of the heating, ventilation and cooling systems.

Fire protection and security solutions are also always up to date: despite the ever-increasing volume of data, energy consumption does not increase accordingly. The ratio of the energy consumed to the energy requirements of the servers has been significantly reduced.
