A new competition for students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in Zagreb has opened! Student authors of papers with applications in the fields of digitalization, electrification and automation in the academic year 2025/2026 can apply until October 15, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.

Best student paper award is now open

The competition is announced by Siemens d.d. Zagreb and the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. This is a major annual award for the best works of FER students, and is named after the famous innovator Werner von Siemens and the founder of the Siemens corporation. The aim of the award is to encourage students to work on research and development projects, as well as to critically reflect on the results. Special emphasis is placed on the originality and innovation of the work, especially in the context of its application in the areas of digitalization, electrification and automation. Preference is given to solutions that contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency and include the application of advanced algorithms based on artificial intelligence (information on Siemens activities and technologies can be found at www.siemens.hr).

Prize

The Werner von Siemens Award is awarded to a single student or a team of up to 3 members, and is awarded in the form of a certificate and a cash prize of 3,000 euros. Each student winner of the award receives a certificate, while the cash prize is divided equally for works with two or three authors.

Competition rules:

1. The competition is open to students of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, who have independently or in a team (up to three members) produced a paper in the field of the competition.


2. Competitors must have student status at Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing in the academic year 2025/2026.


3. Each proposed paper must have a mentor.


4. Only original papers that have not been previously published, have not been submitted to other competitions, or are in the process of being published can be submitted to the competition. Also, graduate theses cannot be submitted to the competition, but students may partially use the knowledge gained and principles used during the preparation of their graduate thesis to create the submitted paper. In that case, the level of overlap between the submitted paper and the graduate thesis will be determined by the committee.


5. The papers will be evaluated by a committee composed of professors of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and experts from Siemens d.d.


6. The criteria for evaluating the works are: thematic compliance with the competition area, originality, innovation, applicability and technical equipment of the work.


The application for the competition must include: a written application from the student (containing: name and surname, contact information, study, module/profile, year of study, title of the paper, name of the mentor); an electronic version of the full paper and abstract in Croatian (up to 300 words, marked with the title of the competition, year and name of the author); a review by the mentor and an electronic version of the final paper (or project) for students who have completed undergraduate studies, or an electronic version of the final paper (or project) and diploma thesis for students who have completed graduate studies.
