NOVVA Data Centers achieves zero downtime

No downtime, no wasted energy or water – NOVVA Data Centers adopts water-free cooling controlled by Siemens Desigo PXC controllers to protect data center uptime and the environment

NOVVA uses innovative controllers to increase sustainability and achieve 24/7 uptime

NOVVA Data Centers owns and operates state-of-the-art wholesale and multi-tenant colocation data centers in Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. With a philosophy that data is the future, NOVVA strives to make sure their data centers are not stuck in the past. The company aims to push the data center industry into the future with thoughtful, innovative technology implementations. When it acquired an existing facility in Colorado Springs, NOVVA needed to upgrade its technology in order to meet the company’s super aggressive sustainability goals. A key step was migrating from water cooling to air cooling; however, this upgrade would require a more sophisticated control system. For that, NOVVA and its controls partner, Holbrook Service, trusted Siemens and its Desigo PXC controllers.

The biggest payoff is that I don’t have to worry about anything. My team is getting the rest they need. They feel good and confident about the equipment they are working with. Everything just works.

A future-proof controller that's ideal for data center applications

At data centers, it is imperative that cooling and other systems operate 24/7/365. Any downtime is a major and potentially expensive disruption, a fault of just a few seconds could cost millions. The Desigo PXC controller offered not just the reliability that NOVVA demanded, but the flexibility, too. With its ability to control both water cooling and air cooling operations, the Desigo PXC system could be installed upfront and then handle the migration seamlessly.

The man in the middle, wearing a light blue shirt, is gesturing towards the panel while speaking to the other two men, one in a black cap and light blue shirt, and the other in a dark blue shirt. Greater redundancy and responsiveness, maximum peace of mind

With uptime at a premium, redundancy is vital in all parts of a data center. That includes the four chillers and two chiller plants at NOVVA’s Colorado Springs facility, along with the associated cooling towers, pumps and fans. The Siemens PXC controllers are set up in a flat architecture, which improves redundancy — if one chiller faults, the other three can immediately adjust to keep the facility at the right temperature and avoid overheating. In the first year-and-a-half since the PXCs were installed, the facility has had zero downtime.
