Did you know that short-circuit calculation is your responsibility?
Machines and their control panels must be designed to withstand the maximum short-circuit current at the feed point – typically upstream of the main switch – so that the system will not be destroyed in the event of a short circuit. U.S. regulations require determination of the short-circuit current rating (SCCR) at the incoming supply point. Unless otherwise agreed, the operator provides this value and specifies it to the system manufacturer.
The manufacturer is responsible for the short-circuit-rated design of the industrial control panel. The control panel must be designed to withstand the maximum short-circuit current at the feed point under fault conditions. NFPA 70 references UL 508A Supplement SB as the recognized method for determining the rated short-circuit current of an industrial control panel.
