A Battery Passport functions as a digital record for individual batteries, documenting their entire lifecycle, from the initial sourcing of raw materials throughout refurbishment and recycling. It contains information about the battery's composition, manufacturing, performance, and environmental impact. The information can be accessed for instance, through a QR-code and can help to increase transparency and accountability in the battery industry. Battery Passports promote the sustainable use and recycling of batteries.
While the Battery Passport tracks a battery’s lifecycle, similar Digital Product Passports (DPPs) will soon apply to other industries, such as textiles, electronics, and construction. As part of the EU’s broader strategy for circularity, DPPs are set to become mandatory in the coming years, helping to create a more sustainable and accountable product economy.
