The road to a future-proof and sustainable facility
What system support and solutions are required to create future-proof facilities, properties and products? And how do we meet the increasing sustainability requirements? Join our webinar series that goes both in depth and breadth throughout the journey.
It is undoubtedly a challenge to plan, operate, and develop a production facility or property so that it can cope with changes, increased availability, scalability, repeatability, and optimal use of materials, raw materials and data.
We know that an increased degree of automation and digitalization is the key to success, as it leads us to use and provide feedback insights from plant data that would otherwise be lost.
Based on several successful customer cases, we have identified six areas where we see huge potential, and where you can already make rapid progress today. We have gathered these experiences in a block-divided webinar series, where you take part in suitable episodes based on which phase you and your business are in. Feel free to tell colleagues about the sections that are more relevant to their professional roles.

Managing the life cycle of a facility is critical to ensuring its long-term efficiency and sustainability.
- Financing: A stable and well-thought-out financing plan is fundamental to ensuring that the facility can be built, maintained, and upgraded. This includes budgeting for initial costs, ongoing operations, and future investments.
- Simulation: Simulations can predict and optimize the performance of the plant under different conditions. This allows potential problems to be identified before they occur.
- Engineering: By using well-chosen techniques and materials, it is possible to create a robust and efficient facility that meets all requirements and standards.
- Cybersecurity: Security is essential for protecting the facility's systems and data from cyberattacks. It includes implementing security measures, monitoring systems for suspicious activity, and a plan for dealing with security incidents.
- Availability: For the plant to be able to deliver continuous service, it is important to ensure high availability. That means minimizing downtime through regular maintenance, quick repair of faults, and redundant systems that can take over when needed.
Integrating these aspects into the management of the plant's life cycle can maximize its performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness over time.
In the series' opening episode, we go through how the entire webinar series is designed. Where you get a good insight into which blocks are right for you, and which ones you can recommend to colleagues instead.
As someone responsible for developing a new production facility or property, you face many requirements and choices along the journey. It can be environment-related requirements, but also that the investment cost must be met with the shortest possible lead time. With the right choice of system, you can create space to get your plant up and running faster. Here, repeatability is very important, so that you, as a user, should be able to reuse information from one system to another and thus become more robust to changes.
Finding financiers who understand the role of technology in making the world a better place is important. Siemens Financial Services shares its experiences and shows how the right financing solution can increase your chances of success with your plan.

This is how the digital twin is being built in the process plant. We look at how data can flow throughout the entire process of your facility, from early planning and design to operation.
A common problem is that data from different phases and disciplines are stored in separate databases that do not communicate with each other. This often leads to the same data having to be entered multiple times, resulting in time-consuming duplication of work and an increased risk of errors or missed information. During the webinar, we will show how an integrated facility can be created to solve these challenges.

Get to know Simcenter, Siemens' simulation and testing portfolio. Being able to verify a product's performance at an early stage in the development cycle, using simulation of the product's digital twin, is a recipe for success. Turn product complexity into a competitive advantage with Simcenter solutions that empower your engineering teams to push the boundaries, solve the toughest problems, and bring innovations to market faster. A typical question that the Simcenter portfolio deals with is: How can we make a product both more powerful and more environmentally friendly? We start with an overview of the portfolio and then do a deep dive into system simulation. Systems simulation involves creating and experimenting with computerized models of complex systems to understand and predict their behavior under different conditions. This method can be used in several fields, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and thermal systems. We end with a practical example of system simulation, "Virtual Commissioning", where you get to see how you can verify that your control system works before a finished product even exists.

Simulation and virtual commissioning is a current topic that affects machine builders, consultants, and even end users.
A clear trend is that the manufacturing industry requires machine suppliers to be able to carry out a virtual FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) to ensure that the function complies with the specification and to demonstrate that commissioning can be carried out without major negative surprises.
We describe how a digital twin can enable the machine builder to secure its delivery. But also how it can be used by the end user, in e.g., operator training, rebuilding, and ensuring the expected production quality.
During the webinar, you will learn about Siemens' range of software for simulation and virtual commissioning, but also some smart tips that can be useful when creating your digital twin.

You may have seen movies where humanity has become part of a giant biological data center and where instances of human consciousness interact in a virtual environment. That's pretty much what we're seeing happening in the automation industry right now. In a world where the pace of change is increasing and adaptability is becoming a survival strategy, we are now seeing our control systems move into data centers where they are instantiated to create a virtual automation environment. Software-defined Automation is a concept that, among other things, deals with how different software interacts in a virtual environment to create a more efficient way of working.
In this webinar, we will present what a virtual control system can look like, how we streamline our engineering in a text-based development environment based on Visual Studio Code, and how we can implement AI in our engineering work. We will also touch on how new technology opens opportunities for completely new business models.

Modern tools make it possible to create a digital representation of lines and machines, where data is seamlessly shared with cloud services such as Insights Hub. This provides flexibility to manage what is analyzed locally and what is processed in the cloud, allowing for scalability in three dimensions: more machines, more use cases, and more users.
When data is stored in cloud services, it can be contextualized – information from machines is combined with data from other systems, such as MES, to provide insights that support data-driven decisions. In addition, we show how modern architecture seamlessly integrates data between applications such as MES and ERP, and how apps can be shared between Insights Hub and Edge for different needs.
The traditional point-to-point connection for data traffic has been replaced by solutions where data is synchronized between necessary applications, both horizontally in edge environments and vertically to cloud services. The Siemens environment also enables applications to be shared between the Insights Hub and Edge, making it easier to scale solutions to more lines and use cases.
With increased opportunities also come greater demands on safety. Siemens solutions have security built in from the ground up, with encrypted communication, certificate-based authentication, and remotely updateable software that robustly protects the system.
