Reducing costs, saving expenditures

Siemens’ energy-as-a-service model makes it possible.

Reduce energy costs while preserving your CAPEX budget

It may sound impossible, but it is reality at stoba Precision Technology due to technical solutions and an innovative energy-as-a-service model from Siemens. Stoba specializes in developing and manufacturing components and assemblies used worldwide, including in the automotive industry. The company is part of the stoba Group, which drives innovative processes including the sustainable supply of energy.

stoba and Siemens energy as a service in action

stoba Precision Technology in Backnang, Germany, has partnered with Siemens Smart Infrastructure to manufacture metal components and assemblies with minimal environmental impact. stoba’s goals are to become carbon neutral by 2030 and make energy generation and consumption sustainable, flexible and efficient. Heterogeneous control systems are being replaced by Siemens Desigo CC. The infrastructure assets captured by Desigo CC include the existing combined heat and power plants as well as a 500 kW-capacity battery storage system installed as part of the project. Peak shaving and flexible system operation have cut natural gas consumption in half. By making electricity, cooling and heating consumption more flexible, stoba will reduce costs by up to 26%, saving about 1 million euros per year.

The stoba Precision Technology project demonstrates that organizing production and energy consumption flexibly helps manufacturing companies achieve cost benefits. System operation in line with the energy market allows operators to benefit from flexible energy rates without sacrificing productivity or requiring manual intervention. Other benefits — such as potential additional revenue from marketing existing flexibilities — further optimize cost structures.

An energy-as-a-service model leveraging the structured financing expertise of Siemens Financial Services enables a customized flexible energy concept that allows the technical solution that’s implemented to reach its full potential. The installed systems become or remain the property of Siemens, which transforms CAPEX into OPEX and makes the project balance-sheet neutral. As part of an eight-year service concept, Siemens guarantees 24/7 service with continuous optimization. For these benefits, stoba pays Siemens a service rate, which is based on the savings achieved.

Carbon neutral production at our largest location is a major goal for stoba. The future-proof energy management concept from Siemens will bring us closer to this goal in a sustainable way.
