Digital Transformation at integrated sugar complexes

Sugar manufacturing is complex: scale-driven, demanding precision, efficiency, and sustainability. As operations expand, visibility gaps slow performance and decision-making. This is where digitalization becomes critical, unifying data, optimizing operations, and enabling faster, smarter decisions.

Digital Transformation at integrated sugar complexes

Sugar manufacturing is a complex, large-scale operation that demands precision, efficiency, and sustainability at every stage, from raw material handling to final production. As operations expand and diversify, maintaining visibility across processes becomes increasingly challenging. Digitalization is key to overcoming this complexity, enabling manufacturers to unify data, optimize performance, and make faster, more informed decisions.

Transforming sugar operations:

GBL’s digitalization journey

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. (GBL), a leading diversified bio-refining company in India, operates expansive integrated sugar complexes producing over 20 products, including sugar, bio-based chemicals, alcohol, and power.

Presently, GBL relies on reporting based on excel and email communication. The reporting system is depended heavily on manual data inputs, leading to delays in data validation and limited visibility into operations. At the same time, critical data remained trapped across nearly 40 disparate DCS and PLC systems and an on-premise database, creating silos that hindered real-time insights and enterprise-wide decision-making.

To address these challenges, GBL embarked on a strategic digital transformation initiative by implementing an advanced IIoT-driven solution to unify operational data and establish a secure, scalable digital foundation.
