Comprehensive energy concept at Ferring GmbH

Kiel-based Ferring GmbH wants to expand its site as energy-efficiently and sustainably as possible. The holistic energy supply concept with all-round service from Siemens is ideal for this.

Climate-friendly energy supply secured

Pharmaceutical production is complex and energy-intensive. Ferring GmbH in Kiel is part of an international company with branches in almost 60 countries and around 5,000 employees. Ferring specializes in the production, freeze-drying and microencapsulation of pharmaceuticals. In 1973, the production facility in Kiel was opened.

Providing energy reliably and efficiently

At the Kiel site, sustainable site expansion is the order of the day. Most recently, a 15,000 square meter new building for research and development, laboratories and sterile cleanroom production was to be built. Pharmaceutical production is energy-intensive: it is necessary to cover a significant increase in demand for electricity, heating and cooling as well as steam and compressed air generation for production. Siemens Smart Infrastructure worked with Ferring to develop a comprehensive energy supply concept that meets the high requirements for efficiency and availability of the energy and steam/compressed air supply as well as being sustainable and reliable.

Holistic energy supply with all-round service

At the heart of the energy supply concept is a new energy center: with combined heat and power plants, boilers, chillers and air compressors as well as associated plant peripherals and pipeline connections – holistically planned and built by Siemens. The entire energy supply of the new building is controlled by state-of-the-art digital measurement and regulation technology. The optimized control of the energy center, including higher-level visualization and operation, is handled by Siemens Desigo. Plant and energy data are continuously recorded and analyzed, which enables proactive maintenance and energy-saving operation. Siemens will take over the technical management of the energy center for twelve years. The full-service contract guarantees energy efficiency and availability.

Low energy costs with high availability

The innovative energy concept from a single source is specially designed to meet the complex requirements of pharmaceutical production. Ferring benefits from energy cost savings of around 925,000 euros per year. Subsidies of one million euros also contribute to the fact that the energy centre pays off for Ferring. At the same time, CO₂ emissions will be reduced by around 2,400 tonnes per year. Ferring will receive comprehensive services from Siemens and a performance guarantee for twelve years – this will allow the Kiel site to concen
