Special protection for special treasure

Siemens' EAGLE Data Center in Munich, Germany, contains six petabytes of data, a large part of the company's 'gold treasure'. This requires top-class protection.

Unrivaled protection for irreplaceable data

A very special treasure is stored in Siemens' four German EAGLE Data Centers: data from operational processes and from numerous customers. Six of the current eight petabytes (8,000 terabytes) of data volume are stored on the servers of an inconspicuous building in Munich. A data center with surprisingly low energy consumption. The reason for this is the Totally Integrated Power concept from Siemens Smart Infrastructure. The building is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Challenge

Burglary protection and access control required an absolutely reliable all-round security solution with state-of-the-art burglary protection technology. There is another security risk for data centers: fire. The high energy load, many cables and flammable materials as well as the constant draught of the cooling system increase the risk of fire. A special and comprehensive fire protection solution was required here.

Solution

The innovative access control system is based on the modular Siport system. It offers, for example, readers for contactless ID cards, key tags, biometric readers or even mobile devices with near-field communication technology (NFC). If you want to go to the servers of the EAGLE Data Center, you first have to hold a special tag up to the reader, then the palm of your hand is scanned. For fire protection, a special smoke detection system (VESDA) detects fires at an early stage. In the event of a fire alarm, gas is fed into the building. The gas, which is harmless to humans, removes oxygen from the fire and extinguishes it immediately. At the same time, the fire brigade is alerted.

Benefit

The access control and fire protection solution is crucial for data center availability and data security. It has proven its worth: Since its opening, the Munich EAGLE Data Center has been running reliably and uninterruptedly. This is also ensured by the redundancy of the various system components, from air conditioning systems to energy supply.

Protecting data is arguably one of the most important tasks in today's world, and includes goals such as confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Innovative security and protection concept

Data protected from unauthorized persons

The access control system prevents unauthorized persons from accessing security-relevant areas. Sensitive areas are particularly protected.

Concept minimizes fire risk

The fire protection concept is specially designed for rooms with an increased risk of fire and server operation. Extinguishing is done with harmless gas.

Safe operation around the clock

All systems are designed to be fail-safe – including building technology. This ensures uninterrupted round-the-clock operation.

Linked and centrally controlled

The safety and fire protection solution builds on each other in a modular way and is linked to each other. It can be centrally controlled and monitored.
