We are rethinking energy

Due to the complexity of current energy policy challenges, companies and cities can no longer answer many questions on their own. In aspern Seestadt in Vienna, we are working with our partners on a project unique in Europe, researching concrete aspects of the energy future, testing solutions with real-world data under realistic conditions, and developing sustainable, scalable technologies for smart cities.

Innovations for a sustainable energy future

Concrete solutions for urban areas

Since 2013, Siemens Austria, together with partners, has been operating one of Europe's most innovative energy research projects in the Aspern Seestadt district. Sustainable energy solutions are tested there under real-world conditions. The data obtained enables market-oriented, scalable approaches for a climate-friendly energy future. More than 150 experts from various disciplines are working on this unique collaborative model.

Outlook "ASCR NeXt Level. 2028"

The third project phase, "ASCR NeXt Level. 2028" (2024–2028), scales existing innovations to the entire city using the latest technologies. The focus is on five areas: existing buildings, smart new buildings, neighbourhoods, smart grids, and e-mobility. The Living Lab will be expanded to include additional urban buildings and infrastructure such as historic buildings, hospitals, and industrial facilities.

State-of-the-art technologies for intelligent buildings

ASCR's activities explore solutions for intelligent buildings and power grids. Digital technologies such as IoT, digital twins, machine learning, and AI enable new, innovative approaches. Cybersecurity and the use of open-source software are key focuses for developing future-proof and secure systems.

Networking and Intelligence

With the help of state-of-the-art monitoring and analysis tools, as well as intelligent sensors and digital management systems, the network and buildings are to be equipped for the new tasks.

Modern sensors, monitoring, and management systems intelligently connect buildings and networks. They exchange data and flexibility potential via interfaces – leveraging synergies such as digital twins, load forecasts, and data analytics for process optimization.

Self-learning algorithms continuously improve control, optimize operations, CO₂ emissions, and costs, and enable needs-based maintenance. This allows for efficient use of existing infrastructure – enabling entire city districts to actively contribute to the energy transition.
