Comprehensive energy concept

Kiel-based Ferring GmbH aims to expand its pharmaceutical site as efficiently and sustainably as possible. Siemens provided a holistic energy supply concept that integrates multiple utilities, intelligent building control, and full operational support for long-term growth.

Supporting expansion with climate-friendly energy

Ferring GmbH in Kiel specializes in the production, freeze-drying, and microencapsulation of pharmaceuticals. As part of an international company with ~5,000 employees in nearly 60 countries, the Kiel site plays a key role. Since opening in 1973, it has been continuously modernized and expanded.

Most recently, Siemens partnered with Ferring to build a new energy center that ensures efficient, reliable, and climate-friendly power for future growth.

Providing energy reliably and efficiently

Sustainable site expansion is the order of the day at the Kiel location. Most recently, a new 15,000 square meter building was planned for research and development, laboratories, and sterile cleanroom production.

Pharmaceutical production is energy intensive, with a significant increase in demand for electricity, heating, cooling, steam, and compressed air for production. Together with Ferring, Siemens Smart Infrastructure developed a comprehensive energy supply concept that meets the high requirements for efficiency and availability of the energy and steam or compressed air supply, while ensuring sustainable and reliable operation.

Building a holistic energy supply with full service

At the heart of the energy supply concept is a new energy center. Planned and built by Siemens, this center features combined heat and power plants, boilers, chillers and air compressors as well as associated plant peripherals and piping connections.

The entire energy supply of the new building is controlled by state-of-the-art digital measurement and control technology. The optimized control of the energy center, including higher-level visualization and operation, runs via Siemens Desigo. Plant and energy data are continuously recorded and analyzed, enabling proactive maintenance and energy-saving operation. Siemens will take over the technical management of the energy center for twelve years under a full-service contract that guarantees both efficiency and availability.

Reducing costs while ensuring high availability

The innovative energy concept from a single source is specially designed to meet the complex requirements of pharmaceutical production. Ferring benefits from energy cost savings of around €925,000 per year. Subsidies amounting to €1 million also help ensure the energy center pays off for Ferring. At the same time, CO₂ emissions will be reduced by around 2,400 tons per year.

Ferring receives comprehensive services from Siemens and a 12-year performance guarantee. This allows the Kiel site to focus on what it does best: producing high-quality pharmaceuticals for the world market.

The new energy plant supplies us highly efficiently with electricity being generated on the factory site and with heat, cold and compressed air required for production. Therewith, we achieve a high level of energy cost savings and reduce CO2 emissions by around 2,400 tons per year.
