In 1879, Arnold von Siemens, the oldest son of Werner von Siemens, founded the subsidiary in Vienna of the Siemens & Halske, Berlin Company. Today, Siemens is among the country’s leading technology companies. The new Siemens City headquarters in the company’s historic location in Vienna Floridsdorf was the first office building in Austria to receive the LEED Gold environmental certificate. The LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is awarded to buildings that deploy climate-friendly technologies aimed at actively reducing greenhouse gases.
Together with the city of Vienna, Siemens formed a research association for implementing innovative and energy-efficient urban technologies. As part of one of the largest urban development projects in Europe, the association plans to make Vienna's Seestadt Aspern district a model for sustainable and livable urban development.
