Today’s energy producers depend on the safety of their operations and 100% availability of energy. They need to quickly respond to fluctuations in power demand, and must be able to shift to island operation to ensure an independent power supply when needed. The challenge is to meet these standards while also reducing emissions and costs.
Grid fluctuations are currently compensated primarily by fossil-fired power plants. They provide dispatchable and reliable power, but depend on external sources when an autonomous power supply is needed. In this case, battery energy storage system (BESS) serve as ideal back-up for instant power supply.
SIESTART sums up the capabilities of both fossil and renewable power generation by integration of BESS. Such hybrid solutions provide instantaneous, reliable and sustainable energy.
Power Plant Optimizer
Discover the ecomic and ecological added value of our innovation driven power plant solutions.
SIESTART enables an advanced upgrade for existing power plants, enriching them with new features, while extending performance and providing new business opportunities – independently of OEM technology. It also significantly improves the value of newly built power generation units. With its exceptional flexibility, SIESTART can be used with gas turbines, steam turbines and combined cycles. This helps you to easily scale your power production operations and reduce operating expenses (OpEx).

Fossil energy suppliers increasingly face the challenge of having to respond as quickly as possible to load fluctuations. SIESTART provides the ideal solution, offering more flexible and more cost-effective power plant operation – with capacity at the push of a button. Using state-of-the-art energy storage systems, fossil power stations can be ramped up and down more quickly, and be used as a more targeted comprehensive solution – even for black starts when necessary.
The combination of a battery energy storage system (BESS) and fossil-fired power plant opens up a range of different services for the grid and power plant operators, including black-start capability and regulating services.
Generally, power plants use small diesel generators to start turbines, or to provide power references such as voltage and frequency to allow renewable power generators to reconnect. Due to its speed of response as well as advanced control, SIESTART can be used as an alternative to a black start diesel generator. It saves time and improves reliability while helping you boost revenues. SIESTART can also provide the necessary short-circuit power to ensure a given protection sequence.
Run-up and start-up of a gas turbine require time. However, even the fastest and most flexible power plants are still too slow to respond to grid fluctuations within a matter of seconds and almost impossible to respond to demand down-turn situations. Depending on the scale of the battery energy storage system (BESS), it can immediately supply power to the grid and absorb power from the grid and can therefore fully or at least partially take over this activity for a brief period. In this mode of operation the BESS would supply power to the grid while the gas turbine is ramping up. The battery energy storage system continues to supply power to the grid until the gas turbine takes over and the battery can then be recharged (if needed).
The provision of regulation capability using battery energy storage system (BESS) is significantly faster (< 1 sec) and much more precise than what can be accomplished with a fossil-fired power plant. Power plant operators can generate additional business opportunities by offering this regulation capacity, and operating the plant with more flexibility. On simultaneous implementation of the BESS and the gas turbine, the battery assumes the task of fast response (both positive and negative), while the gas turbine only supplies the energy to deliver extended service requirements and balance the battery charge level. Such an optimized operating mode significantly reduces the stress on the gas turbine such as fuel and maintenance costs.
The battery energy storage system (BESS) supports the gas turbine in accelerating output adjustment and stabilization/smoothing of volatile load. BESS can already supply energy before and during gas turbine startup, therefore the overall energy output of the power plant to the grid can be significantly accelerated to respond to sudden load changes.
Should spinning reserve be required to respond to large grid under-frequency, the BESS can be used to temporarily increase the maximum power output of the power plant at the POI. The otherwise permanently restricted output from the power plant can then by circumvented, and therefore offering power generation capacity up to rated output opens up additional revenue opportunities.
The most important objectives in stabilizing gas and steam turbines on grid outages are thus to limit the speed increase as well as to maintain turbine operation at the auxiliary power requirement or in island mode. On disconnection from the grid, the excess energy in the rotating system must be removed through the generator as electrical energy and input to/stored in the battery energy storage system (BESS). This significantly reduces the acceleration and thus the speed increase. Conflicting oscillations between the BESS and the turbine are not anticipated, because the battery energy storage system operates in power-controlled mode and the turbine in speed control.
SIESTART hybrid solutions combine the performance of fossil-fired power plants with reliable battery energy storage system (BESS), jointly controlled by our SPPA-T3000 control system. It provides additional power to the grid within milliseconds.
